2 vs 1 in the Circle

The 2 defenders inside the circle must ensure one of them is always marking the attacker inside the circle. While one player marks the defender, the other should be covering the space and looking to make the interception.

Zone defence

2 vs 2

The 2 defenders are only allowed in the Circle. Attackers can move in and out of the circle as they wish but can only have one player at a time inside the circle. Start the practice with only 1 shooter and 1 feeder.

Small games

End Zone Game

Using cones create two end-zones either side of the middle 3rd on the court and divide your players into 2 equal teams. One player starts with the ball in their end zone and starts the game with a pass. The team in possession of the ball has to always keep one player in the oppositon's end zone - This players has to be marked by 2 defenders. The rest of the players play in the centre, this creates an overload for the team in possession. The aim of the game is for the team in possession to score as many points as possible before losing possession or within a time limited. A point is scored with every pass and 5 points are scored for every pass made to the player in the end zone.

This drill works best with the full squad (10+ players). One feeder stands at the side of each third of the court (white in the diagram). These players are on the same side as the attacker (red 1 in the diagram). There are 2 defenders in each third (blue in the diagram). Using just half the width of the court, Red 1 has to work their way down the court receiving three passes from the player at the side of the court, in each third.

Intercept and covering defence

4 Attackers with one ball stand on four corners of the square, they are not allowed to move from their cones. To start with include 3 defenders. These players must move around the area trying to intercept passes from the attackers by driving into the space between the passer and the receiver. If a defender attempts to intercept the ball and fails and is out of position as a result one of the other defenders should spot the gap and endeavour to cover the space.

Groups of three or fours one ball.2 feeders and 2 defenders. feeders stand 4 to 6 metres apart defenders position themselves beside the feeders.Player 1 and 2 pass the ball back and forth. White 1 must move to intercept the pass.Progression:- Defence must move round feeders so eventually she is starting from behind her.

Maximum of 8 players form the outside of a circle with 2 defenders inside and 1 ball. Defenders have to work together to intercept the ball and should communicate to each other by calling who is marking the ball and who is marking the space in order to work more effectively.

Working in 2 teams players must make passes across the square. When the ball reaches the other side it counts as a point. The teams work in opposite directions, one team horizontally (blue), one team vertically (green). Players on the outside edge can move up and down the length of their line, but can not move off it. Players in the centre of the square can move anywhere within the square but must make sure they are aware of the players around them. The focus of the practice is on the defenders. The 2 defenders (red) work inside the square and can only intercept passes from their allocated team.

To be played in groups of 8. 2 defenders stand in each section of the court. 2 attackers work their way down the court passing the ball between them. They must make a given number of passes in each third before progressing to the next third. Defenders must stay within their own third. ProgressionYou could put 3 defenders in each third.

Taking on two defenders

Position cones 8-10m apart. A starts at one cone, F stands with the ball at the other cone. 2 defenders stagger themselves between the two cones as shown. A sprints towards the first defender in the attempt to convince the defender she is driving a certain way. A should be driving hard enought that D moves to close her down. As D moves to mark A, A changes direction quickly and drives towards the other D, who moves to shut her down. A should change direction again quickly and drive towards F. F passes the ball to A once she is free. A resets and repeats.

The feeders are positioned adjacent to one another, instead of opposite - with an attacker and defender inside the square.Within the square, there will be 2 defenders and 1 attacker.The attacker can offload to either feeder.However, if the attacker cannot get free within 3 seconds OR the attacker is holding the side of the free feeder - the ball can swing to the free feeder.The ball can only be swung once, at which point it must be passed to the attacker.The attacker must still try to get free each time for the first feed.The practice allows the attacker to work on a 2 on 1 situation.

One A starts with the ball. She passes to her partner who has made a move to get past a defender. First A then moves, taking on the other defender to receive the ball back from her partner, a 1-2 passing pattern. A then passes to another A at the front of the opposite line to where she started. Defenders mark tightly. Working As line up at the back of the opposite line to where they started. New As repeat.

Use an area half the length/width of the court with 2 attackers, 2 defenders and 2 trailing players.The attackers are working to get the ball to travel from one end to the other using their passes and the defenders are trying to intercept.Trailers need to stay behind the ball and can receive and pass from an attacker if the other attacker isn't free.If the ball is intercepted then the defenders become the new attackers.Pairs should keep score.

Set up a triangle with cones. 2 players are attackers, 2 are defenders.Attacker starts on the top of the triangle and the other starts on one of the bottom corners.They are defended by 2 defenders the whole time.The person at the top of the triangle starts with the ball, passes to the other attacker and runs into the triangle to receive the ball back. Again they pass to the other attacker and cross the bottom line of the triangle to be outside of the triangle.They receive the ball back again and the other attacker runs to take their space at the top of the triangle. The attacker behind the line passes the ball to the new top attacker, takes one of the bottom corner spaces and the drill repeats.

2 players 1 ball 1 post. The player at the top of the circle starts with the ball and passes it to the other player to receive it back under the post. to take a shot . After the shot the other player moves to the top of the circle to receive the ball and the shooter moves wide out of the circle. The practice then starts again.

In pairs, 1 player - the statue - holds a ball aloft in one hand. Partner runs, leaps and snatches the ball, lands with the correct footwork, Once theabove is achieved with balance, add a turn once the player has landed so player is facing the same way she has come from and returns the ball to partner. Once the ball has been snatched, the statue could sprint to another point to receive the ball before the exercise is repeated.<BR> Progress this practice through all 3 stages until all players are balanced

3 stage progression drill aimed at improving defenders ability to be first to rebounds.Players split into pairs.Stage 1 - attacking players starts behind defending player. On the coaches signal, attacker tries to get round the defender, with the defender using their body to prevent the attacker from reaching the ball. Attacker and defender switch after every go.Stage 2 - same as above but the movement is initiated by the defending player bouncing the ball.Stage 3 - same again with the movement starting after the attacker has taken a shot. The defender here is trying to be the first to claim the ball off the rebound.

The first team starts with the ball inside the attacking third, with all the other players except one stood outside the area. The aim for the team in the area with the ball is to complete as many sets of 5 passes as possible. Every time they complete 5 passes another defender from outside the area is allowed in to try and intercept the ball. Once all of the defending players have entered the playing area, or after an interception has been made, the teams change over and try to beat the first teams score.

2 Vs. 2 - Pass and Move Gettin...

Players take it in turns to run through the defender's areas as pairs. The player without the ball leads into the space. Working together they should try to pass and move, maintaining possession of the ball, from one side to the other. If players successfully pass and support each other to the other side without losing the ball they pass the ball to the next pair and then join the back of the queue. If the ball is intercepted though the pair who lost the ball become the defenders and the original defenders take the runner's place at the back of the queue.

Set up: A wall, one third space, one ball, 4+ cones, 2 players. 4 cones are set up in a zig zag formation down the length of a third space towards a wall. The ball is placed on the furthest away cone. A defending player stands in the middle of the cones, they are to &lsquo;pick up&rsquo; the attacker when they drive out. The attacker, drives out towards the first cone and zig zags towards all cones to move past the defender and get the ball off the cone. The attacker passes the ball to the wall and gets the rebound.

2 vs 1 Centre Pass Getting fre...

Set up a 3m x 3m area, with an Attacker  and a Defender inside. A Feeder stands outside the area and starts with the ball. A second Defender is positioned in between the Feeder and the area. You can set this up in the context of the court with the Feeder starting on the Centre circle and the box being in a shooting third. The feeder tosses the ball up to themselves to start the drill and turns to face the attacker. The attacker's aim is to come over the front line to recieve the ball, getting free from the defender.

I have a defender who always tips the ball out, never tries to catch with 2 hands to gain possession, how do I get her out of this bad habit? The same defender always looks down to ensure she is 3 feet before putting her hands over the ball. This takes only takes a second but normally the attacker has passed the ball before she looks up.

Passing, defending, getting free

I'm coaching u/10's and have an excellent A team, but the B team have learners who haven't been playing netball so long. Does anyone have one or two basic activities, easy to understand (for them) which I can drill them with for passing, defending and getting free, as well as something for the shooters. They are always all over the place (we do practice channels) and really struggle to get free - they run a bit and then just stop to wait for the ball. Anything, even just some advice would be appreciated! :)

Hi there, I'm coaching for the 1st time this year - a group of year sevens. During practice I keep reminding them to move to the open spaces and not to bunch up. However they don't seem to grasp this. I have blown the whistle mid game and they have to freeze and then we take a good look at our positioning then they move into an open space they could use. They are a very talented team. Is there any drill/strategy I can use in order to stop them all running towards the ball together. They are keen for sure. Thanks. Trish
