Should all of the players on a netball team be taught to shoot?
Hi Grace,
Personally I think yes. Every player should have at least a basic understanding of shooting technique and some idea of good positioning for shooters within the circle. There may come a time during the season when injuries and other absences mean you need to play some players out of position. This will be a lot less intimidating for them if they have had at least some practice during the year. You never know, you might just uncover the next Nat Medhurst if a mid court player gets the chance to try some shots. Regards, Simon
Hi Grace,
I agree with Simon. Everyone should have a basic understanding off all core skills. I find it actually helps players game by understanding what an opposition player can do or is thinking.
For example, a GS should practice defending, so that they know how a GK may attempt to defend them during a game, and vice versa.
Let me know what you think,
Tara
I also believe that all players should be taught to shoot. It is too early to pigeon hole players right up to U15s as they all reach puberty at different times and growth spurts can change the dynamics of where to play players. My daughter was a circle defender and goalie in her first 2 state teams, until she became height challenged and now plays at C. The WA in her early team is now 6` 2" and is our GS.
in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
