I have thoroughly enjoyed using your site to help me with my coaching plans for my under 9's netball team.
I have a team of 11 and 12 year olds. They have all played netball for at least three years. Their general ball skills are pretty good but they keep "running" with the ball. What are the best drills to break this habit? Liz
If my C and GD block the GA so that she can't get into her attacking third is that okay. They are basically facing them and getting in their way so that it makes it hard for the GA to get free? Also, if the GA then runs into one of my defenders and the ball is just about to be shot by their GS do I pull it up as a free pass in the centre third or do I presume that it does not affect the movement of the ball and let the GS continue with their shot?
Pulling up contact. My GD was blocking the GA from getting close to the ring today by getting in her way. The WA had the ball on the edge of the circle and had not made the pass but the GA pushed into my GD to get through so I gave a penalty pass to my team where the push happened. The other umpire seemed to think that this was not affecting the movement of the ball. Was I right to give us the ball and award a penalty pass, despite the WA not having passed yet?
My junior squads tend to ask for a ball to be passed to them, even when there is a defender nearby-often resulting in interceptions. I have tried playing bounce pass only games which works really well, just wondered if anyone had any other ideas I could try ?
In the drills GK dancing & Prevent the Middle Pass..is the defence Open Marking(angled toward the passer)? If they are closed marking is this a progression? Is it harder? I prefer closed marking but for a beginner is this going to be harder? Thanks. I am new to coaching & loving Sportplan:)
Are there any good practises that will help my team be more aware of others on the court. As our game is speeding up we are tending to become more focused on the ball rather than the whole game. I know that we will improve with time, but in the meantime, are there any recommended practices that will help to develop player awareness?

She anticipates well, and when she sees the shoot about to release the ball, times her action and from her stretch, flicks her hand to try to deflect the ball from its path. In a recent game, she was continually pulled for contact when doing this. She felt either the shoot had raised the ball up into her hands (and it should have been the GD's possession), or the shoot had actually released the ball before she then deflected it, rather than her knocking the ball from the shoots possession. The umpire after the game was happy to discuss and said the GD had been penalised for knocking the ball out of the shoots hands, and should have stuck with the stretch and not added the flick. Any advice?
How can GS and GA help each other in circle when defenders are tall, intimidating and high contact (ie putting hand on ball when setting up to shoot, putting hand over face). Can GA stand between GS and GK to give GS a clearer shot?
My associate coach and I disagree on whether U/10s should play different positions or focus/settle on one, maybe two. I don't want to put the girls in a box at such a young age but I also don't want a Jack of all Trades situation. They are still developing so much that I feel I'll be doing them a disservice by just putting them in the same position every week. The assistant coach says if we move them around we're not going to do as well but that is where the participation vs performance comes in for me. Surely at this age development is more important than winning?No coach likes to lose but I don't want to win at the expense of them experiencing different positions. What do you guys suggest? What are some of the tips that can assists me to become a best shooter?
Hi everyone, I'm a GS/GA and I shoot well but I struggle to make opportunities for myself to shoot in games. It is slightly better when I play GS if i stay in the circle, but when I play GA or come out, it has happened that I haven't shot at all. I either get blocked from going in the circle straight away or am too slow to position myself. Could anyone give me some pointers about basic movement? I have watching videos where players roll/cut - if a player is marking you face on and blocking you from entering the D, would that be how I get around them? I am a PE teacher looking for beginner drills to teach about 100 students at a time. I am thinking of running a circuit type session with anywhere from 4 - 8 groups. I am looking for simple drills that I can do with limited resources, so the students are able to grasp the basics to be able to play some games at the end of the unit of work.
