Are there any good practises that will help my team be more aware of others on the court. As our game is speeding up we are tending to become more focused on the ball rather than the whole game. I know that we will improve with time, but in the meantime, are there any recommended practices that will help to develop player awareness?
Any drills or routines that improve balance, footwork and peripheral vision will help with body control which is the key to avoiding contact. A simple drill with one player passing to another player weaving in and out of a line of players is one example. Set up can be (1) line of players in single file towards feeder, receiver weaves in and out moving towards feeder, (2) line up from left to right of feeder so receiver weaves around line backwards and forwards and (3) stagger stationary players in an area and let receiver decide pattern of movement around them. This can be started without a ball, then add a ball and increase speed and types of passes as agility progresses. Insist on correct footwork, eyes up at the ball not on the stationary players, movement close to stationary players with passes placed in the space in front of them and rotate all through after each round.
