5 Player Warm Up

As Player 1 moves direction, players 2,3,4,5 shuffle around shadowing his movement. When Player 1 changes direction, the other players must do so too, staying in the box formation.

Bump 2

Throw the ball in the air and bend your legs, with arms out in front. Bump the ball up using mainly leg movement not arm swing. Keep it going, changing which arm you bump the ball with (try and use good rhythm and mainly legs).

First time Overhead Passes over the net

Two players stand either side of the net and pass the ball overhead first time to their partner on the other side of the net.

3 Grass roots

Grassroot serving

2 players, 1 ball. The player serving has to hit the ball over the net so that the other player can catch the ball. If they are successful 3 times in a row the player can take a step back and move closer to the back line. Once players reach the back line they can swap roles.

Movement Game with Net

Start the game by volleying the ball over the net to the player at the back of court they overhand pass the ball to the player at the net who sets the ball up for the player to move forward and play the ball over the net with a volley, this then is repeated for a set number, length of time or can be made competitive.

4 Passing Drills

Two players stand at the baseline at 1 and one player stands at the baseline at 5, a feeder feeds the ball alternating to 1 and 5 the players run from 1 to 5, side step the last two steps and pass to a target directly in front of them. Then a player runs from five to one and does the same if you have run from 5-1 then you go to the baseline at 1 and visa-versa. This drill continues for set time or number of good contacts. This drill can be fast, slow or whatever the feeder makes it, you can underhand feed or feed with a topspin hit. You can do this with two feeders feeding at the same time, however this can cause confusion but that’'s ok. Players need to be able to sort it out or give them some help and guidance by asking appropriate questions i.e. what do you do if?

Side Shifting

Hold the ball in the palm of your hand and stand in a good ready position. Using your bodyweight and movement side-step taking the ball with you, letting it bounce, catching the ball with the other hand and changing direction (don't throw the ball, use the whole body movement to move the ball side-side).

Players work in pairs setting the ball to one another first time. This can be done with players facing each other without a net or with one player on each side of the net. Player 1 sets the ball across to player 2 who sets the ball back again. Ensure passes have enough height on them to allow the rally to continue smoothly.

One player stands in Zone 3 and spikes the ball into the court. The other players, starting from behind the sideline, take it in turns to receive the ball, return it to the player acting as the feeder and runs to Zone 1. Once all the players are in Zone 1, the player feeding continues to spike the ball into the court but the other players must change positions from side to side in the backcourt.

Place four cones so they make the corners of a square. A player stands at each cone, and using tiny foot movements, moves around it as fast as they can. On the coach's signal all players change their position, going clockwise. Players must face the net at all times as they would during a match.

Bounce and Move VSD:GRID GAME ...

One of the partners has the ball and holds it out away from their body in front of their belly button. The player then turns and drops the ball and the partner has to move and catch the ball before it bounces twice and they repeat (no dummy moves and the ball must land twice in the same place).As they get better at the game, the player catching the ball must be facing their partner when they catch the ball and the ball must be caught with their hands just in front of and between their knees.The catcher then must turn and drop the ball within 1 or 2 seconds. You play this game for points or time.

In pairs, the players stand around 3-4m apart. Player 1 rolls the ball along the floor to player 2, then shuffles sideways to the left or right. Player 2 collects the ball and rolls it to player 1. Player 2 then shuffles left or right. The movement while passing the ball should imitate the underhand pass, with both arms straight when passing.

The coach loops the ball into the air, slightly to the left or the right of the blue cone, and the first player runs out and bumps the ball back into the coach's hands.The player then continues in the direction they were moving and touch the red cone. They then shuffle back towards the middle where they receive their second feed from the coach which they bump pass back.Finally the player shuffles across the other wide cone, touch it and then return to the middle to play the third and final bump pass.

Throw the ball in the air using two hands, move to where the ball is coming down, lay down on the floor and catch the ball.When you have caught the ball, throw it up in the air, get up and catch it (when laying down be aware as to not bang head on the floor).

Three players stand on one side of the net, one in zone 2, one in zone 3 and one in zone 4. These players set the ball in the air and then set to the next player, while a fourth player on the other side of the net follows the ball and jumps to block when each player sets it in the air.

Dig, spike and block imitation...

Starting on the attack line, the players imitate a dig. Then, they jog forward to perform a spike movement. On landing they then move forward to the net to perform a block movement, land and jog backwards to their starting point on the attack line.

They keep setting the ball until they have reached the other side of the court. Once at this end, they set the ball to their teammate who does the same thing, while they walk across the court.

In pairs the players face each other with a ball each. Player 1 holds the ball with one hand, but it must be opposite hand to his/her partner. On the coach's signal both players throw the balls underhand to each other, but each player must catch the ball with the opposite hand he/she threw the ball with.

Bump, set, bump, set! 2 Warm U...

Working in pairs, one player sets the ball to the their partner who moves to meet the ball using good footwork to bump the ball back to their partner who catches the ball. Ensure the player bumping the ball lets the ball bounce on their wrists and only makes minor adjustments to give direction to the ball (back to the setter).

Set up four cones in a square in one half of the court, with a player and a ball on each. The remainder of your players should line up a couple of meters behind the back line.On the coach's whistle players take it in turns to run out each cone in turn where they play a pass and return before running to the next station to play another pass and return.

In pairs facing each other, players throw the ball two handed overhead and into the ground, bending the body correctly. The ball should then bounce up and reach the other player.

Coach is located next to the net while players stand in a row between attack line and baseline. The coach indicates with his hands the direction (right, left, forward, backwards, up, down) he/she wants the players to go. Note: indicating up means players must jump; down equals squat; right is a shuffle.

Run And Step Warm Up 8 Block D...

Players start on the attack line and run forwards towards the net. Upon reaching the net, they take two steps sidewards before running backwards to the attack line. From here they repeat the test, all the way across the court.

zone 2 and 4 8 Block Drills - ...

Player 1, standing at the net, performs a block movement, and returns back to zone 1 behind the attack line. Player 2 (standing close to the net in zone 4) then hits the ball to player one to mimic an opponents spike. Player 1 then digs up the ball to player 3 (who is standing close to the net in the centre of the court), who then sets up player 1 to finish with a right side attack. The drill is then repeated.

I can't seem to get them to talk our pass the ball to the setter it goes everywhere. They don't understand how to move with the ball. I have four passing.
