1v1 Tackle and Support Clear

3 players (One player in Tackle Suit, one ball carrier and one support player) and one ball. Ball carrier attacks suited player and takes leg tackle. The suited player returns to feet an competes for ball before the support player clears.

Beating the ball and rucking

Decision-making in contact. The aim is to get the ball carrier beyond the tackler and the support of players making decisions about who and the threats and who to clear out. The coach throws one of the 4 players the ball, they then have to beat the defender inside the contact area without passing. The other 3 players must run around cone (5 m to decide) before supporting. 4 attackers, 1 tackler and 2 pads Pads can come forward once attacker enters contact area (5 m x 7 m) Attacker sees footwork to trying get beyond defender. If they don't get tackled, then they look to score. You can keep changing the number of pads. Keep changing who the primary attacker is.

1 player stands crouched down 1 foot either side of a tackle bag holding a ball at the end of the bag 2 players run around the wide cones to then come in towards the player with the ball and clear out the ball . Repeat the practice going the other way.

Counter Ruck

Condition the drill in favour of 1 team, in this case the blue team. All players lay on their fronts behind the tackle bags. On the coaches whistle, the 2 teams move to contest possession. The blue players can move straight over the bag to contest, but only the 1st red player can do the same. The other 2 red players have to run round the cones before moving in to counter ruck.

Set Up: 3 players one in tackle suit one with ball one tackle bag The player in the tackle suit crouches or kneels next to tackle bag which is representing an attacking player. The suited player tackles the bag and the player with the ball places it next to tackle bag to simulate the tackled player placing the ball. The suited player then returns to their feet and gets ready to compete for ball with the third player who clears out suited player the win the ball.

Players work in groups of four against two defenders (holding tackle bags) who are stood inside the channel. The attackers run around the furthest cone into the channel and ruck to push back the first defender stood over the ball. Once the ball has been gathered the attackers run towards the second defender and form another ruck (ball carrier should turn before contact is made). Once the bag holder has been forced back players carry the ball over the line.

Defenders must use two hands to tag the ball carrier and have the body position as if performing a tackle Once tagged the ball carrier goes to ground in a strong position and places the ball long. The defender holds a position over the ball carrier. The next closest defender performs a push up along side the tackle. One player from the attacking team must ‘win’ the ball by positioning themselves strongly over the ball carrier and in a position to clean out. A halfback can clear the ball to continue the attack.

Technical work at the breakdow...

Players start face down, on the coach's whistle players get to their feet to contest the contact area. Red player 1 and the blue player should be closer to the ball so that they reach it quicker and present a target to be cleared away by the supporting red defender. As the second red player reaches the ruck they should bind with their team mate to contest the ball, with the aim of disrupting the ball.
