10 passes before shooting

The three attackers start at the transverse line and must make five passes before passing to shooters. A further five passes must be made before a shot can be made. The attackers should be aiming to receive the ball on the edge of the circle when they come to pass to shooters.

Shooting

All intercepts for WD/GD

Feeder on the centre circle, 2 attackers on the third line (~5m apart) with the defender stood behind in between them. 2 feeders positioned on the transverse line at each side. Feeder can pass to either attacker and the defender will go for the intercept. Whoever gets the ball then passes to the feeder and the attacker that the ball was thrown to runs back towards the edge of the circle with the defender. The feeder has the option of passing directly to the attacker or passing to the feeder on the same side as the attacker, who can then pass to the attacker. Defender will go for the intercept of whichever pass is made to the attacker.

Interception

Centre Pass Defence

Have the feeder start on the centre circle. Set up two boxes starting in the middle of the court and ending at one edge, with the bottom edge of the boxes being the transverse line. The feeder's aim is to pass to the attacker, in either box. They will be marked by one defender in the box and another defender behind the box, who will only move in if the first defender over-commits to an intercept and becomes unable to recover their position. The defenders are aiming to make sure the attacker doesn't receive the ball in the inside box. Ideally they would intercept the ball. In his scenario of a Centre pass it would be the Centre defending from in front with the WD ready to come into the box from behind.

Defence

Dictating a Centre Pass

Set up 3 cones along a transverse line, one in the middle, one at the edge of court and one in between these. Have one defender behind the line and one in front. The attackers aim is to come over the line to receive a Centre pass, inbetween the inside cones. If the attacker receives the ball: In between the middle cones: 1pt to the attacker In between the outside cones: 1pt to the defenders Keep score out of 6 attempts. The defenders need to be aware of each other and work to restrict the movements of the attacker.

Getting free for a Centre Pass

The purpose of this drill is to encourage Attackers to get into a position near to the transverse line when receiving a Centre pass. Set up 6 cones, beginning with 2 close to the middle and near the transverse line and then 2 more pairs of cones moving out and further away. The nearer cones are worth 3 points and as they get further away this decreases to 2pt and then 1pt. Aim is for the Attacker to get free and move into the centre third ready to receive a Centre pass. Attacker shouls look to shiftt he defender's bodyweight enough to reach the cone without being tagged by the Defender.

Attack

Numbers Game - Quick Passing Attack

Have two evenly numbered teams lining up on either side of the netball court. To start the drill call out a number. Upon hearing the call the first players in the queue must run out (in the image 5 players from each team must run). All players must touch their base line then run into the middle to try and be first to receive the ball. Whichever player is the first to cross their transverse line receives the ball from the coach and their team is attacking, the other team is defending. The aim is to get pass and move down the court to score a goal. Once completed, the players go to the back of the line in their respective teams, and you call out another number to start the game again.

Small games

Shooter Shuttles

Set up: Split players into runners and shooters - no more than 4 shooters at one time who start in the shooting circle, each with a ball. The runners line up on the middle transverse line facing the shooters. The Aim: Shooters need to score 50 goals before the runners finish their shuttles. They can shoot from anywhere in the circle and must keep count themselves. The runners must complete 20 lengths of the two thirds before the shooters score their 50 goals. Each time the runners touch an end line that counts as 1 shuttle run. When both groups have finished change the 4 shooters this means some players will be running again which is good for their fitness and all players will run twice. You could allow them to complete 15 shuttles if they are struggling.

Example GD clears and runs in a crest WD moves to receives ball from GK and passes the ball to GD GD then passes the ball to C The Centre should take up a position just over the transverse line in the centre third. This will prevent congestion in the goal third and give the WD and GD space to bring the ball through and consequently the ball carrier has an option of a team-mate ready to receive ball further up the court. The WD and GD are set up as shown. One of these players will cut across the other (taking her opponent with her). This creates space for the other player to drive into with the opponents chasing. The player who drives across (this is called clearing out) continues to run in a crest shape and offers for the next pass. The subsequent pass may well go to the Centre and by now the ball should be 2/3rd up the court in 3 passes. If the timing is correct the ball should travel up the court in a straight line. The team has successfully converted good defence work into an exciting attack.

Movement

The Backline Pass Roll

The GK has a back line pass. The Centre takes up her position just in middle of transverse line giving the impression she is not going to be involved in this immediate passage of play... but SHE IS! The WD and GD roll away to opposite directions (taking their chasing opponents with them) leaving huge space for the centre to drive into receiving the ball at the top of the circle. The centre, remembering to use the 3rs (receive, rotate and release) passes to the WD, who passes to the GD. Again the ball has progressed from defence to attack over 2/3rds of the court in 3 "simple" passes.

Movement

Virtual Defending

Two lines (Indian file) behind the centre transverse line facing the centre of the court. On the coach's whistle players drive out at a 45 degree angle, one player to right/one to left, pretending to intercept the centre pass which they were not able to intercept. Your players now pretend that the (imaginary) attacker now has ball. Defender turns to face attacker and implements 2nd stage defence (hands over ball to pressure pass). Your player then shadows the attacker along the sideline of the court before then rejoining the back of the line.

Other driving player would have driven around the transverse standing feeder and drives straight back towards base line and will receive a pass from the last stationary feeder midcourt before sending the last pass to the other driving player.

End drill – Feeding into circleSet up: four corners of 2-3 players, 1 ball, goal third end of court.Aim for the two groups of players on transverse line to hit the circle edge and feed ball into the circle to a shooter with a defending player.Bottom left corner (A) player drives out along sideline. Receives a pass from the defending player in the circle.Player from top left corner (B) drives straight into the court to receive a pass from the sideline player. Player B passes back to player A and drives towards the circle edge where player A delivers a long ball to player B as close to the circle edge they can get. Set up GS and GK in the shooting circle. Two midcourt players start with the ball in the centre third towards the transverse line. One player in the centre of the court (C), one on the side (WA). Ball starts with the player in the center and is passed square to the other midcourt player who passes straight back.The WA player on the side then drives as if heading to the pocket, in the same channel. C player passes a long ball to the pocket for the WA. GK comes out of the circle hunting for that long ball to the WA ensuring the timing is right.If GK is successful, they then pass back to the C and drive up the court.

Set up GS and GK in the shooting circle. Two midcourt players start with the ball in the centre third towards the transverse line. One player in the centre of the court (C), one on the side (WA). Put a bib on a player to be the floating defender. Ball starts with the player in the center and is passed square to the other midcourt player who passes straight back.Floating defender to put pressure on these passes- hands over the ball.The WA player on the side then drives as if heading to the pocket, in the same channel. C player passes a long ball to the pocket for the WA. GK comes out of the circle hunting for that long ball to the WA ensuring the timing is right.If GK is successful, they then pass back to the C and drive up the court. Floating defender to defend the GK player coming up the court and trying to get the next ball. GK player will need to dodge or front cut in order to get free for the pass from the C player.

Offside question - centre pass.

I am an umpire as well as a player, and I had a situation a few weeks ago that challenged my knowledge. On a centre pass. Referring to the third lines. Do the third lines form part of the centre court or are they part of the goal third. In other words at what point would GA,GD,WA and WD become off side? If their foot/feet were on the line? Same for the Centre, would she be off side if her foot/feet were on the line?

Rules question: Breaking on a centre pass... Can someone please clarify?

When going for the centre pass, as a WA I was taught to lose your player behind the transverse line then sprint to the line and as long as I was in the air (over the transverse line) and not grounded in the centre third when the whistle blew, I was not breaking... This used to work brilliantly and gave me a head start on my defender. However now it seems that just being in the air when the whistle is blown is considered breaking from the umpires point of view .......can someone please clarify the ruling on this?? Thanks

offside at a centre pass

Need some help on a dispute on a decision I made during a match I was umpiring recently.A player was tying her shoe laces in my half of the court. A goal had been scored in the half I was umpiring. Centre stepped in the centre circle whilst this player was still attending to her shoe lace. So in affect she had not got herself on side and then gone off side she just did not get on side.I blew the whistle to start play as the centre was ready. As the player who was in my half and was off side, I blew for offside.Can I have clarification on this please, was I correct, or should the other umpire have called this offside even though the player was in my half?Secondly, a reputable umpire told me a couple of months ago, that the umpire blowing the whistle to start the game at a centre pass, controls both sides for off side? I.e. All players that go offside at the centre pass, to the left and right of the centre circle. I was not suite about this so need clarification on that too.Thanks in anticipation.

Offside question - centre pass...

Good day. I would like some clarity regarding transverse lines. Are players allowed or how far are players allowed to step on or stand on transverse lines during play or at goal circles and at centre passes. Please some controversy regarding this rule.

I am Father coaching my Daughters Netball Team & I wanted to use a different set up when Taking the Centre Pass to Start ,so I need to know where the GA,WA,WD & GD are allowed to stand when a Centre pass is being taken?DO they need to stand at the line as normal or can I change it up a bit?-Say one player up at line in the very centre of line and one player standing or running around behind in the centre of their Third??
