How do I coach 'turning in the air'?
I too, would be interested for any tips on this, it is something my team is struggling with at the moment
Ha this is a hard one to teach but i have done it successful with under 9's. I line them up along a transverse line and get them to take a few steps forward and on the third they jump off one leg and turn in the air and land on the outside foot, i call it their ballet lesson for netball. Or another way is to line them up as they are a WA and about to receive the centre pass and explain that when they leap for the ball to try and land looking at the goal post, but really explain how this move effects the defensive palyer as it puts them then on the back foot and the attacking team can move the ball alot quicker without the defense defending their pass. I find if you explain to them why its a important move and what advantages it will give them on a centre pass etc. they will pick the idea up quickly. This takes a long time and patience i acheived this over several training sessions and then slowly introduced them to catching the ball. As a coach if you want your players to be able to do a move make sure you know how to demonstrate it yourself. Always remember if you have fun teaching it they will soak it in like a sponge.
Get your player to stand on a bench, jump in the air from the bench and turn so landing facing the bench, this way they are already in the air when thinking about turning, it just gives them that much more time to practice the turn with out worrying about the jump as well. Once they have mastered this add the throwing of the ball as they jump into the air off the bench
