Backhand Live drill

Coach feeds the ball from the forehand side of the court. Players start in the centre and hit the first backhand back to the coach. The player should try to recover back to the centre to then move towards the short ball and hit a backhand cross-court.

Backhand Drills

Consistency and accuracy

-Players hit forehands aiming for the line.-Players maintain high net clearance to achieve consistency.-Three points are deducted from the final score (i.e. the rally count) for each shot that was hit into the net.-After 2 minutes see which pair held the longest rally.-After one or two rounds swap to backhand.

Rally Drills

Deep cross court

-The coach feeds down the line, the player runs to hit the ball cross court into the target area.First player to 3 shots (or higher if more advanced players) wins the game.-The drill can then be run similarly from the backhand corner.

Forehand Drills

Deep Forehand And Backhand Drill

Players will be fed 2-6 balls each. The balls are hit down the line into the target area as marked by the cones. The feeding can be varied i.e. higher, faster or with more spin.

Forehand Change of Direction

Player 1 - is working on change of direction on forehand. 2 forehands cross court, 1 forehand down the line Player 2 - feeding - can work on lateral movement and consistency, 2 cross court forehands and 1 back hand line.

Rally Drills

Forehand to Catch

Drill takes place within the service box on each side of the net. Coach feeds the ball underarm with one bounce to the player. The player returns the ball with a forehand for the coach to catch directly or with one bounce before catching. Coach feeds again varying the feed to make use of all the service box. Drill continues.

Forehand Drills

Groundstrokes, Inside-out forehands

-Players work on ground strokes and depth, aiming to hit beyond the service line.Possibly put targets down.-After rotations, swap to backhand. - Players no.1 and no.6 can hit inside-out forehands depending on ability.

Rally Drills

Line and Cross

Players work in groups of 4 volleying one ball between 4. Players down 1 end start by always hitting cross court, the pair down the other end hitting down the line. Players continue in this way until "change" is called by the coach, and the pattern resumes with all players trying to keep the rally going as this occurs. Courts compete between themselves looking for the longest rallies or alternatively, players can compete amongst the groups of 4 by counting errors, so that the player with the least amount of errors at the end of the drill wins!

Doubles Drills

Using the middle to neutralise

Player 1 is working in a full court and player 2 is 'feeding' from the centre of the court along the baseline. The players rally co-operatively for 3 minutes but with player 2 working the ball around the full-court making player 1 move a reasonable amount without a pattern. Player 1 is aiming for the rectangle at the back of the court marked by targets and player 2 should count how many balls player 1 makes into the rectangle within the 3 minutes. When the time is up the players switch roles. This drill can be repeated 3 times for each player and then the totals added up to see who was the most accurate!

-Alternate feeding to forehand and backhand side.-Players in line shadow hit behind the front player.-After two strokes hitters move to back of alternate lines.

Drill to practice kicking accuracy and contesting the ball in the air.Split the players into two even teams with different coloured bibs (red and blue).Set up two squares (roughly 15m x 10m, with a 5-10m middle zone - see diagram). Split each team in half so half of each team is in each square.Players have to try to kick the ball to a player on their team in the opposite area to score a point.For each kick that is caught on the full by a team mate in the opposite area the team scores one point.The opposition team are trying to disrupt the catch by competing in the air or trying to distract the player catching the ball.PROGRESSION:Use one ball to start with then introduce multiple balls.Players kick with the ball with their less dominant foot.Catch with one hand only.Set a time limit on the time a player is allowed to hold the ball for before kicking it back (e.g. 2 seconds).The catcher has to pass to another player in their team to kick the ball.

A cone is placed on the baseline. The player performs regular serve, where the goal is for them to jump over the cone while serving.

Players get into pairs. Each pair takes on another pair in a cross court competition. Players take it in turns to hit the ball deep into the coned area. Every time a ball is hit short the receiving player can hit a winner down the line to score a point. The players who hit the short ball can try to recover and return the down the line winner. If they manage to return the shot they do not lose a point. Next rally starts again.

In this drill, the player works on hitting with high trajectory over the net. This exercise forces players to swing from low to high to achieve good consistency. Visual target gives immediate feedback to kids about the previous shot. Young players love fun games so coaches have to prepare the lesson with this thought in mind. More interesting targets we put on the court, more motivated the players are to work hard and fight. That's why coaches should always change targets to make a quality lesson with youngsters.

Player 1 has to tell player 2 whether the are serving into area A or B. Player 1 has two serves, if the serve goes in the correct area and they eventually win the point they get a bonus point. If the serve goes in the unstated area the point is still played out with no bonus points. The first player to 4 points wins.

Player alternates aggressive and regular down the line shots.Drill specifications:2-6 repetitions per setThe minimum number of repetitions is 2 but it can go up to 6. It all depends of how many players we have on the court. With less players more repetitions are recommended while with more players less reps will be a better option to keep all students hitting. Coach can set up 2 lines of players to work on forehand and backhand down the line shots at the same time.

The coach is feeding from the basket and players hit 2 balls each, a 1st volley and a 2nd volley. Players can start between the baseline and the service-line running forwards and split-stepping as the coach makes contact with the ball. After hitting the first volley down the line, they must move forwards closing the net down and edging to cover the line before they hit the 2nd volley cross-court. The 1st volley must be played deep and the 2nd volley as a shorter angled shot.

Players 1 and 3 rally for 1 minute, during which time player 2 walks to the other side of the net, ready to take over from player 1 after the 1 minute is up. Player 2 and 3 now rally for 1 minute.

Players get into pairs. Each pair plays against another pair rallying inside the tram line. The two players rotate in each team, taking it in turns to hit the ball using only their forehand. Every time the ball stays inside the tram lines they score a point The first pair to score 10 is the winner.

How to Improve Error Detection...

HI there,I am an assistant coach for a small tennis academy. It has been 2.5 years since I’ve started. I do not have any certification of being a coach but I was a state player(representing my state) back when I was a player in high school. The only knowledge/experience I have as a tennis player was from when I had training back then and even so it was limited. A big issue/challenge I am facing right now is error detection and correction. I realized I am unable to identify the problems of my players which is beyond the obvious and I tend to correct the effect of the problem instead of the root cause of it. i believe what I don’t have is a coach eye, I was wondering if you have some kind of materials or course or even guidance on that matter. I am really keen on improve that part of me. I feel like that part is holding me back as I can give an accurate correction to my players which then hinders my player’s improvement.
