Tennis: Serving Accuracy Toss (part 1)

Thanks for everything! Sportplan has helped me to improve my tennis...
Andrea, Tennis coach

DESCRIPTION

Player imitates serving action with the ball.

Player tosses the ball up and tries to catch the ball in their non dominant hand without moving the feet, or their hand.

COACHING POINTS

The toss is responsible for control of the serve so players should never serve if they feel that the ball was placed in the wrong spot. Ability to toss the ball into the same spot over and over again is a base that has to be learned from the earliest stages of development.

In this drill, player works on their toss accuracy, which is responsible for balance of the body and control of the serve. Coach has to tell players that ball should "drop" into the non dominant hand without any movement of this hand.

Many players make a mistake by tossing the ball too low for the serve and this false feeling of success has to be corrected from the beginning. For players who do this exercise well, coach can modify exercise by setting up the cones and let the player toss the ball into the designated area.
