Accurate Digging

Players work in pairs with a ball between them. The player starting with the ball spikes it to their partner who needs to get down and did the ball back to the spiker, who should easily be able to catch it. The receiving is trying to pass as accurately as possible.

A basic passing drill in pairs, can be used for either the dig pass or overhead pass

In pairs, one of the players throws the ball underhand to his/her partner. The receiver must: Stands in ready position Keeps their arms in front on themselves in the digging position Let the ball bounce off their forearms Hold the position

4 Passing Drills

Controlled underhand pass and receive

In pairs, get the players to face each other. Player 1 underarm throws the ball high to his/her partner so they have to receive the ball using the dig method, and then they catch it. The player who received the ball then passes the ball back to the partner who receives the ball using the dig method, and then catches it.

Dig

The dig is a defensive shot played when the ball is driven hard towards the waist or below of a player.The ball has a lot of energy and pace so the defender does not need to put energy into the ball like a forearm pass, but ensure that they are still when the attacker contacts the ball and they contact their defense with their forearms and angle the ball upwards to a target of the middle of court.

Spike And Dive

Players stand in pairs with a ball between them. The player starting with the ball spikes it to their teammate, who digs it back. The receiver then spikes the ball again but this time, the digger must dive to dig the ball back, regardless of their distance to the ball.

6 Advanced Drills

Throw, Dig, Catch

Players work in pairs with two balls between them. One player underhand throws the ball upwards, while the other spikes the ball towards their teammate who has to dig the ball back before catching the ball that they threw in the air.

Start the game with equal or as near as possible teams. Serve an easy underarm serve to start the game then using only digs try and score points against the opposition. One player plays the ball then goes off court to the back and queues until their turn again. Play the game to set number of points. Players must go for the ball, it's about effort, control and tactics.

The other players, starting from behind the sideline, take it in turns to receive the ball, return it to the player acting as the feeder and runs to Zone 1. Once all the players are in Zone 1, the player feeding continues to spike the ball into the court but the other players must change positions from side to side in the backcourt.

Dig, spike and block imitation...

Starting on the attack line, the players imitate a dig. Then, they jog forward to perform a spike movement. On landing they then move forward to the net to perform a block movement, land and jog backwards to their starting point on the attack line.

My daughter is in 8th grade and has made the team this?

My daughter is in 8th grade and has made the team this year as she did last. We have a new coach this year who doesn't allow the girls to use their knee pads. What is the purpose of this?   Does it help at all with development of the sport?  It seems sadistic to me and I can't understand how causing the girls pain will help them to "dig" a ball or encourage them to dive for anything. Thank you
