DESCRIPTION

In pairs, one of the players throws the ball underhand to his/her partner.

The receiver must:

Stands in ready position
Keeps their arms in front on themselves in the digging position
Let the ball bounce off their forearms
Hold the position

COACHING POINTS

Be sure that passing players are warmed up and are able to throw the ball accurately.

Developing players underhand passing ability

Keep the point alive and create winning opportunities by perfecting the best underarm passing technique. Develop control in your play by teaching you players about their positioning, and movement before, during and after the digs.

OFTEN USED WITH...

Dig, bounce, pass it forward:

In pairs, the players face each other.

Player 1 throws the ball underarm to his/her partner.

Player 2 receives the ball using a dig method, and hits it high in the air, lets it bounce once, and then returns the ball to his/her partner using the underarm pass method.

4 Passing Drills

Consecutive passes:

Each player has a ball.

The aim is to keep underhand passing high over their own head for as long as possible, all the while keeping in control of the ball.

Controlled underhand pass and receive:

In pairs, get the players to face each other.

Player 1 underarm throws the ball high to his/her partner so they have to receive the ball using the dig method, and then they catch it.

The player who received the ball then passes the ball back to the partner who receives the ball using the dig method, and then catches it.

4 Passing Drills

Receive, return and spin:

In threes, the players stand in a row, the person in the middle faces player 1.

Player 1 then underhand passes the player in the middle, who return the ball back to player 1.

The player in the middle then spins around to receive the ball from player 2, whereby he returns it using the underhand pass.
