Approach and Close

The coach feeds into the service area.-Before the coach feeds Player 1 has to nominate the corner into which they hit their approach shot.-Player 1 plays an approach shot Player 2 has to hit down the line, Player 2 then finishes the rally at the net.

Attacking

Deep cross court rally

-The players rally aiming to hit the target area. -The players take turns to hit a shot each.-First team to 10 points wins the game.-This can be played fom the backhnad conner too.

Forehand Drills

Forehands (Inside out) (Dead Ball) Forward.

Drill set-Up:Players start off on centre and moves around backhand for first forehand then moves off to play seconf forehand.Topic of Emphasis:Players should turn and prepare, back peddle for inside out forehand, then recovering and pushes off for second forehand.Variation:Players can alternate the direction of the balls, as well the coach can vary positions 1 - 3.

Forehands. Forward / Insideout, with recovery. (Dead ball)

Drill Set-Up:Players line up on centre; move out to play play strokes amd recovery back to centre (touch cones) then move out to play second ball.Topic of Emphasis:Players should take quick adjusting steps and as they get closer to ball smaller quicker steps should be taken just prior to contact.Coach dictates the side.Variation:Players can alternate the direction of the shots.Balls can be hit high or deep by the coach.

Forehand Drills

Forehands. Live ball with direction and change of direction.

Drill Set-Up:Players start ofrf on centre and rallys 2 balls back to coach and plays third shot down the line.Topic of Emphasis:Players try to recover after first shot and try to hit to catch with depth.Coach should not volley below the net.Variation:Second forehand could be inside out and third forehand could go cross court with depth.

-Feeder hits first ball to forehand alley.-The second ball if fed to backhand alley.-The third feed goes deep to the forehand side.

-Place markers in each corner.-Players aim for either of the two outside markers attempting to make the opponent move.-Players must recover quickly after each shot.

Recovery Volleys (Second Position)

Players are positioned just inside centre service line. Player then moves forward for forehand volley then recovers around cone for backhand volley

Two Ball Drill

Players start on the side of the court and run across where they return the ball from a feeder and continue running to hit another ball before running to the other side of the court, and recovering while walking round the court to join the back of the queue.

-Alternate feeding to forehand and backhand side.-Players in line shadow hit behind the front player.-After two strokes hitters move to back of alternate lines.

The player stands inside the service line between 2 cones, and the coach throws the high ball close to the net. The player moves forward, hits overhead and recovers to the cones.

Coach is in front of the player. Coach rolls the ball on the ground quickly after player serves the ball. Player's goal is to recover behind the baseline before ball goes between the legs.

Coach feeds the ball to the backhand side, with the player just behind the baseline, slightly to the backhand side. Player runs out to the left, around the ball so that they use a forehand instead of a backhand, then recover their position to the starting position and run out for a second and third time. After the third time they go past the middle as though the next shot was coming to their forehand side.For the first two shots they hit the ball crosscourt and then the last one is down the line.

Hitting on the run is a skill that has to be practiced often because players must learn to control the distance between the body and the ball and how to hit the shot while still moving. In this exercise, the player aims for the middle of the court because it is the best defensive tactical return. This is because there is more court to aim for and the middle of the net is lower. Players should also know that hitting on the run forces them to lose time as they stop, change direction and recover. So tell your players to aim high over the net to gain additional recovery time while the ball is in the air.

Tennis: Cross-court rally game...

Players get into pairs. Each pair takes on another pair in a cross court competition. Players take it in turns to hit the ball deep into the coned area. Every time a ball is hit short the receiving player can hit a winner down the line to score a point. The players who hit the short ball can try to recover and return the down the line winner. If they manage to return the shot they do not lose a point. Next rally starts again.
