Rugby: 1 vs 1

The ball carrier walks up to the defender and turns away to present the ball to their own team. The defender should try to turn the ball carrier and keep him facing away from support.

4 players are required for this drill; 1 attacker, 2 defenders and 1 scrum half. Once the defenders are set up in either corner of the try line they are assigned a coloured ball. The attacker is to start in one corner of the baseline. The drill begins when the attacking player is fed a coloured ball by the scrum half. The defender associated with that coloured ball will then come out to defend the try line from their corner. This drill relies on both the reaction speeds of the defenders noticing which ball is in play and also that of the attacker noticing which defender is in play and consequently where there is space to attack.

Pass gets given to the attacker who has to run down the grid. When the tackle comes in the player with the ball has to present the ball. Tackler has to get to feet quickly to get the ball and pass it back the the initial passer of the practice . Next two player go. After each go the players swap sides.

1 vs 1 in a small pitch All players line up on the same line on one side of the pitch in the middle. On the coaches signal, a player with a ball goes around a cone in one corner and another player goes around the other corner of the same sideline. Then it is a simple 1 vs 1 with the player with the ball using footwork to beat the defender. You can vary the level of contact at your discretion.

Players work in groups of six, with 1 ball per group and set up in the following way: 4 attackers vs 1 defender (between the first cones) and another defender between the second set of cones. Defenders can only move sideways in an attempt to stop the attackers getting through the area.

Seated on floor, feet touching, knees bent, join hands and pull one another forwards and backwards to loosen up lower back. Same position hands joined, rotate upper body from left to right in an upright seated position to stretch lower back and warm up obliques. Standing, facing one another each both players place 1 hand on the other players' shoulder, swinging legs in a pendulum motion to stretch the hamstrings (see video below). Same position but now swing leg diagonally across to stretch groin and glutes (see video below). Both players do 10 push ups taking at least 5 seconds to complete 1 push up, to warm up and stretch chest and back. Swing the arms in a circular motion to loosen up shoulders and warm up the arms. Pick up one another in a tackling technique and take 2 steps with player on your shoulder, then put down softly and slowly. Make sure to pick up with both legs and shoulders (same leg same shoulder) One player leans forward, the other places his hand on his shoulders, and resists while the player leaning works his way forward using leg power. Back to back, one player resists with the legs and the other pushes, resist 60% so that the player can keep moving forward. 1 vs 1 scrummaging with a max effort of about 50%

3 vs 1 vs 1 Ball Carrier passes the ball into the post player and runs across the front of him and receives the ball back. His 2 supporting players then react to his body language and execute 2 x 3 vs 1.

Players work in groups of six, with 1 ball per group and set up in the following way: 4 attackers vs 1 defender (between the first cones) and another defender between the second set of cones. Defenders can only move sideways in an attempt to stop the attackers getting through the area.

This is a simple 2 v 1. The two players have to get past the one defender without being touched, that's it. The defender will start 10 meters back, and can move anywhere inside the box. The attack must remain inside the box and all pass msut be legal. Don't forget to change the defender.

Groups of 5 Combine grids to make 2 channels each 10m x 20m 1 Ball per group Ball carrier tries to score a try by running past the defender. Support players follow the ball carrier. If tagged, the ball carrier must pass the to one of his / her support players. The defender must GIVE the tag back before trying to make a second tackle.

1. Tracking Create a V shaoped conned area. Defender at one end, attacker at the other end. Attacker attempts to score using footwork, defender has to track them and try stop them by gettign a shoulder on contact to there hips. (50% intensity)2. 1v1 Track and TackleIn a grid an attacker is positioned on one end and a defender at the other end. Defender passes to the attacker who attempts to score against the defender within the grid. 3. 1v1 Tackle Channel Players line up in two lines adjacent to the coned area.<br>Coach shouts go and the front two players run round their end to end up facing each other.<br>The coach passes the ball to the attacker who runs at the defender, and the defender tries to take them down.4. 2v2 Track and Tackle 10m wide channel, 2 attackers start with the ball while 2 defenders atart at the other end.when instructed the attackers attempt to score agaisnt them.Do continuous reps.

6x6m Grid Ball Players line up in 3s opposite sides of the grid. Simply pass the ball along the line. 1 defender is in the middle of the grid putting pressure on all ball carriers.Once hand completed the next line starts immediately. Defender swaps out when there is a mistake or when he touches someone with the ball. Progression: add another defender, make the passes wider.

The lead attacker runs at straight at defender. Attacks runs into space, either on the left or the right, takes the tackle and then off-loads to the support player who should be running down the opposite channel to the first attacker (so if the the first attacker runs left the support player goes right).

The aim of the drill is to develop ball carrying in a contact zone.

Four players per group inside a 10m x 30m Channel. Requires 10 cones and 1 ball. Two players start outside of the grid with two players inside. One of the outside players passes the ball to one of the inside players before both of the outside players (defenders) run through the red gates. The two inside players (attackers) have to try and cross the try line before the defenders can tackle them, if the attackers are too slow they will create a two 2 v 1 situation.

2 players start on opposite end of a 5x5m block On the whistle they run down the line, turn the corner, The player with the ball must try and beat the defender with his feet

Coach starts with the ball and can throw the ball to either one of the outside players of the 3 players ready to play. The player in the middle always joins the player receiving the ball to play a 2v1 against the the 3rd player who becomes the defender. The attacking players run around the cone nearest to them and the defender runs in the opposite direction. When they meet inside the grid the attacking players must use the extra man to get around the defender - either by passing or taking the man on.

Drill to improve short space and wide space overlap play.Set up a grid 15m wide, split into a 5m channel and a 10m channel, and 10m long (see diagram).4 attackers (red) line up along one side, A1 and A2 within the 5m channel opposite D1(blue). A3 and A4 line up in the 10m channel opposite D2 and D3.A1 and A2 run a 2v1 against D1 in the 5m channel. When A2 receives the ball they run out of the 5m channel into the 10m channel and into a 3v2 situation linking with A3 and A4 attacking D2 and D3.D2 and D3 can't move until A2 enters the 10m channel, and to start with can only move laterally along the try line.DISCUSSION:If players are struggling to execute the 3 v 2 situation, widen the 10m channel to 15m and once they have success at this width bring the channel back to 10m wide.PROGRESSION:D2 and D3 can move off the line to put pressure on the attack once A2 enters the 10m channel.

Set up a grid roughly 5m x 5m with two lines of attackers on one side (blue), and two defenders on the other (red). The aim of the drill is for attackers to execute 2 vs 1 situations and score. The attackers start with the ball and run towards the try line (red cones). The ball carrier draws the defender and passes to his support player who scores. Once he scores he passes the ball to the next set of attackers who attack against the next defender. The previous attackers and defender get in position for the next repetition.The attack can start from any of the players, it does not have to start at the same side each time.

two lines of players opposite each other in 2 lines. one of the teams has the ball and has to pass the ball along each player in the line. The player in possession of the ball when the coach calls out go has to run around the cone at the end of the grid to try and run the full length of the grid to score a try. The player from the opposition in line with the player that is running can try to stop the player scoring by running around the cone and tagging the runner before they reach the line.
