Building points through deep cross court shots

The coach feeds the ball to team A, they then have to hit it into the target area cross court. -Player from team B hits down the line if possible, however if under pressure from the depth or pace of the shot,then player B should play cross court or down the middle.Team A are hitting mostly cross court.

Cross court inside-out forehands

The coach feeds the first ball in and then players have to keep the rally going, running around the ball to play a cross-court forehand into the coned area. So player 1 hits the ball to player 1 on the other team who then returns to player 2 and so on.

Doubles movement

-Player 2 starts with a second serve to advantage court.-Returner hits a lob return over player 1s head and follows it into the net.-Player 2 chases the lob and returns it down the line.-Player 1 moves to hot seat in the middle.-Returner hits cross court volley to player 1.-Player 2 comes to net and the point is played out.-The same drill can be repeated on the deuce side of the court.

-The game has two teams of four players each.-Each team consists of two lobbers and two smashers.The smashers must stand in their respective service courts.-Points are scored every time a lob falls between the base line and the service line.The baseliners must hit the ball after one bounce. Points are lost as in normal tennis.-First team to 5 wins.-The baseliners and the smashers swop over for the next game.

Round the World 2

-Pick two teams, one team are the hitters, the other the runners.-The hitters take it in turns to hit the ball over the net, back to the feeder or to a designated area.The coach has to choose the target according to players level of ability. -The team scores a point each time a shot is hit to the agreed target.-The runners take it in turn to run around the outside of the court, back to the team like relay race.-Once all of the running team have done a round they shout stop, and the points of the hitting team freeze.-The teams then swap sides and the new hitting team has to beat their score.

Coordination / Fun Games

Shot selection

-Players play in pairs as a team and alternate shots scoring a point each time a shot is hit in the back 1/3 of the court.-If a ball is hit short the players can attack. -Attacking shots should also be hit deep (1/3 back of court) and if they are hit as outright winners the team will score an extra 3 points.-First side to 7 points wins the game.-The game can also be started with service and then carried on as described above.

The Wall

4 players 2 at the net and 2 at the baseline. Coach feeds the ball in to the baseliners and the point is played out. The volleyers can hit anywhere, however the baseliners cannot hit to the same volleyer twice in a row. After 2 volleys the baseliners are then allowed to lob. The winner is the first team to 11 points, after this the teams swap over.

-Players hit 2 half volleys each aiming at the targets, then move to alternate line.-All players in line shadow move behind hitters.-The same can be done with players at the net volleying.

Coordination / Fun Games

Forehand to forehand team tram...

Players get into pairs. Each pair plays against another pair rallying inside the tram line. The two players rotate in each team, taking it in turns to hit the ball using only their forehand. Every time the ball stays inside the tram lines they score a point The first pair to score 10 is the winner.

Tennis: Cross-court rally game...

Players get into pairs. Each pair takes on another pair in a cross court competition. Players take it in turns to hit the ball deep into the coned area. Every time a ball is hit short the receiving player can hit a winner down the line to score a point. The players who hit the short ball can try to recover and return the down the line winner. If they manage to return the shot they do not lose a point. Next rally starts again.

Split the group into three teams. One team starts in the middle of the grid along the line. The idea of the game is to kick the ball over the middle team and try to land the ball in the oppositions area. If the ball is caught then no points are scored, if the ball bounces in the oppositions area then 1 point is scored. If one of the players in the middle catches the ball (they gain 1 point) then they swap positions with the team that kicked the ball.

Two team of 4.40m x 20m area.The aim of the game is to kick / punt the ball into the oppositions half. If the ball bounces on the ground or is knocked on (from a grubber-kick) then you get 1 point. If the ball is caught cleanly then no points are scored.

This is a speed development drill for tennis. Players line up along the outer tram line to start the race. Players run to the inner tram line and return back to the outer line, without stopping they run to the centre service line and return again, and then continue also run to both tram lines at the far end. The players will touch each line with their hand before moving to the next line.

Separate the whole group into teams of around 5-6. Each team nominates a player to feed first. When ready the feeder throws the ball to each player consecutively until the team has caught 5 balls. The team getting to 5 first shouts Five Alive and win the first point. A new feeder is selected by each team, and the next round begins.

<BR>Start with one marker on the floor. The player must hit the ball upwards and get the ball to land on the marker, (5 points for each success.)<BR>- Now get the players into pairs, taking it in turns to hit the same cone (still 5 points each time.)<BR>-Now give them two cones, placed about 1-2 metres apart and get them to aim for each others markers (10 points)They must let the ball bounce before the hit it.<BR>-This is now a basic rally.

Drill to practice kicking accuracy and contesting the ball in the air.Split the players into two even teams with different coloured bibs (red and blue).Set up two squares (roughly 15m x 10m, with a 5-10m middle zone - see diagram). Split each team in half so half of each team is in each square.Players have to try to kick the ball to a player on their team in the opposite area to score a point.For each kick that is caught on the full by a team mate in the opposite area the team scores one point.The opposition team are trying to disrupt the catch by competing in the air or trying to distract the player catching the ball.PROGRESSION:Use one ball to start with then introduce multiple balls.Players kick with the ball with their less dominant foot.Catch with one hand only.Set a time limit on the time a player is allowed to hold the ball for before kicking it back (e.g. 2 seconds).The catcher has to pass to another player in their team to kick the ball.

2 teams. One team has only 2 people who are gladiators. The other 4 have to balance the ball on their racquets and put it in the hoop without being tagged. When they are tagged they have to go back to the bucket to start again. Give them 2 minutes then stop.

Tell you players the following...... There will be two players on one side of the middle line of cones, and another group on the other side. They will be two separate teams. It's rugby tennis, so the aim of the game is to pass the ball in such a way that the other two players won't be able to stop it from going out of play, however. The ball must be a normal rugby pass, and the ball must hit the ground inside the tennis court on the oppositions side. The passer must be 2 meters behind the center line. That's it, lets play.

What's the best way to decide on contenders for a doubles team?

Please can you describe the most effective way of deciding on the best doubles trialists at a club. Perhaps you could do an article on the clearest way of deciding on contenders for a doubles team. I've heard of one method only %3A you play 4 members of the squad at a time ; get them to play 2 sets, getting the 2 stronger players to swap sides after the first set, and totalling the aggregate scores after those 2 sets in order to rank the players in order of doubles skill... Any better ideas?

Problems with inserting sketches to plans - Resolved

Is anyone else having difficulties adding their own sketches to plans. I can get as far as "choose a sketch" and then it jumps back to the plan. the pre-fab'd sportsplan ones are fine, but I can't add my own!
