Basic Goalkeeping Grip

M grip: Fingers spread and facing down. Almost making a "V" with the hand. Thumbs facing out. Let the ball hi the gloves and then scoop the ball up. W grip: Make a "W" with the two thumbs- thumbs not actually touching. Fingers to the sky.

Blocking With Feet Combination

AUDIO DESCRIPTION 3 Service points 1. Straight on 2 either side 3 gates Sever 1 sets off and GK makes the block then makes save from other 2 servers NOTES: Goalkeeper must make a decision whether to block or smother on a loose touch The goalkeeper must make a decision of how far down the line to go Is the goalkeeper going down the line of the ball keeping as much of the goal behind them? If decision is to go must accelerate fast into it then put the brakes on giving enough time to react

Goalkeeping Passing Exercise

4 Goalkeepers working in a square. 1 main goal and 3 others marked with cones. Goalkeeper 1 plays volley into the Goalkeeper in the opposite goal. Goalkeeper 2 plays ball back to Goalkeeper 1 by rolling the ball on the ground. Goalkeeper one then passes to Goalkeeper 3. Goalkeeper 3 takes a touch and then shoots at Goalkeeper 4 in the main goal. Rotate clockwise after every sequence and change the start point so that the Goalkeepers get used to receiving from both sides.

Goalkeeping Passing Grid

Set up 2 squares beside each ther with a goalkeeper in each square. 2 servers set up opposite each square with a ball each. Goalkeepers to start at the back of their square and come to the front of the square to drop back again and receive a ball passed along the ground from the server opposite. One touch on the ball to take the ball out of the side of the square and then pass the ball diagonally, to the other server. Goalkeepers to then switch over to the other square. Repeat several times before switching over the goalkeepers working and servers.

Heading Game

Players are split into two teams and line up behind the red cone at their end. One blue player starts in the middle between the two middle cones. They are the goalkeeper. To start the drill the coach feeds a lofted throw to the red player to advance onto and try to head between the cones. The blue keeper tries to stop the ball and can use any part of their body to do so. After they have headed the ball the goalkeeping player joins the back of the opposite line and the red player (who just had the attacking header) becomes the new keeper between the cones.

Shot Stopping from a Turn and Shot from the Angle

Ball played into feet of the attacker with a passive defender or mannequin behind them. The Server takes one touch to roll the defender and get a shot away with the second touch. NOTES: Make sure the attacker does not take too many touches The attackers first touch should be wide but not too wide to make the angle so acute that it is difficult to get on target. If this is happening cone an area off in the 18yd box where the shot must be taken inside.

Footwork Hurdle Drill Goalkeep...

Set up evenly spaced line of cones in front of a goal with two hurdles (or set out hurdles with more cones) either end of the line of cones.Server out in front.GK jumps over the hurdle side on and back to the goal. Goalkeeper performs footwork through the cones.As soon as the GK gets to the middle cone (make this cone a different colour to the others for ease) Server plays a ball for the GK to save.Start with server playing the ball into the handsSwap sides entering the line from.

Reflexes in Two Goals Goalkeep...

Two goals positioned 90 degrees with a space between. Server 1 positioned between the near post of each goal with half the balls. Server 2 diagonally opposite at right angles to both goalkeepers. Server 3 has the other half of the balls and is positioned diagonally opposite server 1, in the far corner from both goals. Server 1 plays the ball into server 2 who can play the ball into either goal with a first time shot. Server 3 then shoots at the goalkeeper who did not get the initial shot from server 2.Keep goalkeepers the same and rotate the servers. NOTES:Make sure server 2 plays the ball first time and that server 3 is ready to shoot at the second goalkeeper straight away. Players not working to retrieve the balls so there is always a good supply.

Throwing Sit-ups Goalkeeping -...

One player starts lying on the floor. The ball is thrown to them by the feeder. The feeder throws the ball to the working player as they reach the top of their sit up. The worker goes down with the ball in hand and then throws the ball back to the feeder as they reach the top of their next sit up.

Three servers to stand outside the area.Servers take turns shooting at goal with stationary balls.Goalkeeper to save the shots.

Mark out a square with 4 cones 8yds by 8yds.Goalkeeper starts in the hoop. Then works round cones on the outside.Each time recieves a shot after they have stepped in the hoop with the nearest foot.NOTE:Use cones to make a smaller square if you do not have a hoop

Dealing with the Backpass Goal...

Start with one Goalkeeper, 3 defenders and 2 attackers. Set up 2 mini goals outside and wide of the penalty box.Ball is played back to the Goalkeeper from one of the defending team.As soon as the ball is played back the attacking team are live and can apply pressure. Goalkeeper passes out to defending team who pass back again to Goalkeeper. The aim is to get 2 back passes in.Once 2 back passes have been achieved, a shot at 1 of the 2 mini goals can be taken.If the attacking team intercept, they are able to take a shot at the mini goals straight away.Once one sequence has been achieved, rotate Goalkeeper.

Four service points marked out by coloured cones on the edge of the area.The coach stands behind the goalkeeper with a set of corresponding coloured cones.The coach holds up a cone and the server on that coloured cone takes a shot from distance.

Goalkeeper comes in from side goes to furthest near post receives a shot or throw into hands, returns ball to server and moves backward.Goalkeeper then works through cones set up in front of the goal with fast footwork and receives a shot from the front of the goal into hands and returns to Server 2.Goalkeeper then moves to the far Server around a cone placed between Server 3 and the goal, and receives a shot down low into dive.

Reactions & Deflections Goalke...

Place an obect 8 yards in front of the GK. In this case we use an upturned piece of drainpipe weighted down. Planks of wood such as scaffolding board works well.Server strikes the ball at the object looking for a deflection.GK must watch the ball all the way and react to make the save if it deflects off the object.

Cone Flicks Reaction Save Goal...

GK starts in centre of the goal and a row of cones are placed to one side of the goal.With quick feet the GK flicks one of the cones with their leading hand and quickly gets into set position to make a save.

Long Shots- Small Sided Game G...

Make a small and narrow pitch with two goals each end and a halfway line marked with cones.Two goalkeepers each end and up to 3 players on each team.Players take shots at from behind the halfway line and keep a tally of the score.Goalkeepers can score with volleys or throws.When a goal is scored, goalkeeper rotates out and a player goes in goal.

Set up a square of cones in front of the goal.Goalkeeper makes distinctive movements around the square towards any of the four cones with changes of direction.Server then plays a shot at random intervals.

Goalkeeper advances towards the server.Receives a pass into feet from the server.Goalkeeper then plays a first time ball back to the server.Goalkeeper to retreat back to the best position they can get into before the ball is struck for a shot at goal. Rotate goalkeepers and servers.

The goalkeeper starts by facing into the goal i.e. away from the ball. The coach throws the ball to anywhere in the goal just after he shouts to the goalkeeper to turn.

Starting on the middle cone the keeper moves out to their right to catch the first feed. After getting back to their feet and rolling the ball back out they side-step back towards the middle cone, ready to dive and catch the next rolled ball from the second feeder.
