2 Player Defensive Dig Drill

Player 1 pushes a high ball for player 2 to defensive dig back to Player 1.

2 Player Passing Drill

Two players stand about 10m apart, and underarm pass to each other. The cross on the floor is the area where the ball must bounce. Drill enhances passing accuracy.

Start with the ball with one of the outside players who volleys the ball to the middle player they volley it back to the outside player who then volleys over the two middle players to the outside player on the opposite side and repeat. This exercise is for players to be able to control the ball over differing distances. Again this can either be measured by time or number of good volleys.

Digging Game

Start the game with equal or as near as possible teams. Serve an easy underarm serve to start the game then using only digs try and score points against the opposition. One player plays the ball then goes off court to the back and queues until their turn again. Play the game to set number of points. Players must go for the ball, it's about effort, control and tactics.

2 Warm Up

First time Overhead Passes over the net

Two players stand either side of the net and pass the ball overhead first time to their partner on the other side of the net.

3 Grass roots

Get up, stand up!

Throw the ball in the air using two hands, move to where the ball is coming down sit down on the floor and catch the ball. When you have caught the ball throw the ball up in the air and get up ready to catch it.

2 Warm Up

2 players, 1 ball. The player serving has to hit the ball over the net so that the other player can catch the ball. If they are successful 3 times in a row the player can take a step back and move closer to the back line. Once players reach the back line they can swap roles.

Set and Switch

Start with the ball with one of the middle players who volleys the ball to the middle player they volley it back to the outside player who then volleys over the two middle players to the outside player on the opposite side as the other players are working the players that have just worked change places and repeat. Two Player Set

Players work in pairs setting the ball to one another first time. This can be done with players facing each other without a net or with one player on each side of the net. Player 1 sets the ball across to player 2 who sets the ball back again. Ensure passes have enough height on them to allow the rally to continue smoothly.

Players stand in pairs with a ball between them and are required to receive the ball from high up, let it bounce, and then underhand the pass to the player opposite them who does the same.

Each player has a ball. The aim is to keep underhand passing high over their own head for as long as possible, all the while keeping in control of the ball.

3 player triangular passing drill. Player 1 and Player 2 use defensive dig passes, whilst Player 3 uses the overhead pass. This can simulate player 3 setting up a teammate for a smash

Players keep the ball with both hands behind back and throw it up and forward, keeping their body position the same as if they were receiveing/digging.

Two players have different tasks while underhand passing. One passes the ball as high as possible, the other passes it as parallel to the court as possible.

Pass Short And Long 10 Setting...

Players work in threes with one player in the middle. A player from the outside sets to the middle player before receiving the ball back. The middle player now turns 180 degrees and the player with the ball passes to the players at the other side of the court. Players on the outside set the ball once to the middle and then to the other side.

Place a few balls on the baseline and spread them out. Players move in and out between the balls, moving as if they were in defence. Make sure players avoid contact with the balls.

Jump Over The Ball 4 Passing D...

Players start on one side of the court and have a ball in their hands, and another in the middle of the court. They overhand pass the ball in their hands forward so that it drops on the other side of the laying ball. The players then run, jump over the ball and underhand pass the ball back to a teammate who will be waiting at the starting position. The next player will then do the drill.

Place your finger in the middle of the back of your partner and try and keep it there. The partner then walks around changing direction, stopping, starting and side-stepping etc.

Baseline To Zone 6 Advanced Dr...

Three players stand on one side of the court with a receiver on the other. One setter stands near to the net while another is one the baseline, and a spiker is on the wing. The receiver passes the ball to a setter who sets the ball up to the other setter and runs back to the baseline. The other setter now passes to the player on the wing and runs back to the baseline, while the spiker now hits a winner over the net before returning to the baseline.

In threes, the players stand in a row, the person in the middle faces player 1. Player 1 then underhand passes the player in the middle, who return the ball back to player 1. The player in the middle then spins around to receive the ball from player 2, whereby he returns it using the underhand pass.

Underhand rolling 4 Passing Dr...

In pairs, the players stand around 3-4m apart. Player 1 rolls the ball along the floor to player 2, then shuffles sideways to the left or right. Player 2 collects the ball and rolls it to player 1. Player 2 then shuffles left or right. The movement while passing the ball should imitate the underhand pass, with both arms straight when passing.

Players stand opposite each other with a ball each. They pass the ball high before tipping the ball to their teammate, who will be doing the same thing.

Players face the net, with their arms in front of them controlling the ball. Players jump up and reach over the net before dropping the ball. The challenge is for the players to catch the ball while landing before it hits the floor.

Dig, bounce, pass it forward 4...

In pairs, the players face each other. Player 1 throws the ball underarm to his/her partner. Player 2 receives the ball using a dig method, and hits it high in the air, lets it bounce once, and then returns the ball to his/her partner using the underarm pass method.

Scissors 2 Warm Up - Volleybal...

Two balls per player, who is laid on his/her back. One ball is kept in his/her hands which are held with straight arms behind/above their head, the other ball is kept between the ankles. The player then brings his/her legs up as vertical as possible, keeping their legs straight and the ball in control between their ankles. Once a player lifts his/her legs to around 90 degrees to the hip joints, he/she reaches to touch the ball in their hands with the other ball. After that goes back to laying flat on the floor.

To start the exercise, one player volleys the ball to their partner who digs the ball up to themselves then volleys the ball back. The other player then repeats this pattern.

Starting in the centre of the court, players stand in a row behind each other facing the net. On the coach's signal the players shuffle right and left. Every time they reach an axis or sideline they must bend and touch the floor with both hands.
