Bag Slams | Contact Conditioning Circuit Exercise 2

This is the second exercise in a series of three that can be put together to form a contact conditioning circuit. The circuit can be sets of 30 seconds of hard work followed by 30 seconds of rest. Swap in this circuit for your usual fitness routine to give the players something a bit more interesting and transferable to a game. Alternatively, this would be a great exercise to include as part of a warm up. Players work individually, picking up a tackle sausage and driving it into the ground. Repeat for the whole 30 seconds. This exercise will develop your players core strength, which is immensely important in most areas of the game. Moreover, this exercise simulates how players will have to maintain power in a game. For example when going from making a tackle to then contesting the ruck. 0.40 - What is the purpose of these conditioning circuits?

Contact Skills

Cone Crawling Contact Conditioning

Players start in a bear crawl position with a cone on their back. They should crawl 5-10 metres forwards and then back whilst keeping the cone stable. Focus on staying low in a strong body position, perfect to warm up for tackling.

Groups of 2 Bags Balls Contact conditioning 1. Body height clear out work In there groups, do contact hits on each shoulder. Stand 2m apart and take turns doing hits against bag 2. Crocodile role One player lies on top of a tackle sausage (long way round), the group of 4 take turns swapping roles of being tackled and tackler. Focus is the crocodile role. 3. Clear out. One player stands over the top of tackle bag competing for the ball. Other player arrives from 2m away to clear out the player, to prevent the threat of stealing the ball. 3. Bounce and compete Players lay either side of the a ball. When whistle goes, both players bounce off the floor, one competes for the ball while the other focuses on clear out or crocodile role. Do 3 sets of 2mins. Repetitive drill.

Low Tackle and Clear | Contact Conditioning Circuit Exercise 3

This is the third exercise in a series of three that can be put together to form a contact conditioning circuit. The circuit can be sets of 30 seconds of hard work followed by 30 seconds of rest. Swap in this circuit for your usual fitness routine to give the players something a bit more interesting and transferable to a game. Alternatively, this would be a great exercise to include as part of a warm up. Players work in pairs, one player holds a tackle bag behind a tackle sausage. The other player makes a low tackle on the sausage and then drives through, clearing out the player holding the tackle bag. This player then goes to ground and gets back up to complete another repetition in the other direction. It is the job of the player holding the tackle bag to lift up the tackle sausage after each repetition. This drill will increase players overall fitness levels while being very relevant to game situations. 0.21 - Why is this important for players?

Your players should work in pairs. One player lays with his back on the ground and the other lays across him facing down. The player with his back on the ground has to work really hard to get back to his feet against the resistance of his partner. This exercise will develop your players core strength and ability to manipulate the body in order to get back to their feet. This drill is simulating aspects of the game such as having to roll away after making a tackle.

Step 2 - Players make a double shoulder hitbetween 2 bags opposite.Step 3 - active player moves down the line to hit the next group of 2 bags. At the end players start again, aim to do 2/3 min sets then swap the bags.

The ball carrier has to run into contact with one of the outside player and turn to give the ball to the 2nd player in the middle who has to support very close. On being given the ball the new player with the ball has to run into contact with another player in the circle for the other player to support and get the ball.

Groups of 3/41 Tackle Sausage.1 Tackle bag. 1. Tackle Bag conditioning.Players align 6m apart, one side with tackle sausage. Work for 1 min constantly tackling and carrying sausage back and forth with partners. 2. Tackle and Roll conditioning. Same as before but introduce roll after making the hit. Roll with bag to escpae collision area. then same as before, pick up the sausage and run.3. Add DefenderA 3rd player is introduced, holding Tackle bag who acts as a attacker clearing out the ruck. The Defender must bounce up and clear the tackle bag player coming over the ball, then same as before. 4. Tackle, Roll, Clear All 4 stages togther now, adding a roll in before clearing out the attakcing player with tackle bag.

Players stand in a inner circle and have an outer circle 5m behind them. 2 players in the middle. one player passes the ball to one of the outside players. The other central player runs at the player with the ball rips the ball off the player and presents the ball to the original passer. This player then passes the ball to another player in the circle and the practice repeats it self.

Put six cones out around in a circle. One player starts with the ball at the top of the circle. The attacker runs forward and the defender must make the tackle from the angle they're starting from. The defender gets back up, retreats to the next cone and makes another tackle from a different angle.

30 + players - Teams of 10/13Bibs Balls 1. Shoulders on - low intensityShoulders on contact game on half a pitch, contiton is on the tackler. Tackler must perform a down up after shoulder on contact, immediatly after he/she needs to get into a good body postion to compete at the break down. Attacking team must put 2 people into the breakdown to prevetn threat stealing the ball. 3 teams are working in rotation, to ensure the working team is always active. 2. Same game - increaced intensity (now the defender can steal the ball if can get to it) Attcking team must show urgency to remove the threat at the break down. Defending team must adjust and maintain good body postition at the breakdown.

This is a simply set up game designed to test players' ability to continuously make tackles, especially when fatigued.Each area should be about 10m long and 5m wide - 1 tackle tube required.Starting from one end, a player runs to the other end where the tube is standing up, and the player tackles the tube to the floor.That player must then pick the tube up and run back to the original position and place the tackle tube there, stood up.The other player in the pair runs from their end, and tackles the tube to the floor, before picking the tube up and carrying it back to thetheir end.Continue this for one minute.

Keep going, but don't forget to change the players on the tackle shields.

2 players minimum Tackle Sausage -Crocodile roll is one technique to repmove threats from a breakdown.<br>most useful for smaller players to move larger ones. <br> -Require control, power, accuracy.<br>Identify if croc roll is the right technique to use. <br>- Target the defenders upperback/lower neck region. <br>- Initate the clear out by big shoulder contact into that area, set feet wide, then bearhug the defender <br>- Use momentum and rotate hips downwards, maintain strong grip and roll palyer off the ball. <br>- Finish movement on top of player and compete for ball.
