Tennis: deep shots

1 Minute Rally and Swap.

Players work in groups of 3. Players 1 and 2 rally for 1 minute after which player 2 steps aside and allows player 3 to tale their place. Players 1 and 3 rally for 1 minute, during which time player 2 walks to the other side of the net, ready to take over from player 1 after the 1 minute is up. Player 2 and 3 now rally for 1 minute.

Deep directions + angle changer

Deep zone and angle zone are set by cones. Coach feeds balls to one side. Player performs tactical pattern based on deep cross court shot, deep down the line shot, and short cross court angle shot. Drill specifications: 1-2 repetitions per set 1-2 patterns in a row is a number that each players should hit. With more players coach can set up 2 lines to work on forehand and backhand at the same time but it requires good feeding skills to keep the patterns in a right pace. Otherwise players should perform physical drills e.g core strength to improve power of the groundstrokes.

Forehand Drills

Dominate with two solutions

Coach feeds first ball shorter to the ad side. Player moves inside the court and hits offensive forehand inside out. Coach feeds another ball short to the deuce side. Player finishes with forehand drop shot cross-court.

Forehand & Backhand Drill

Drop it where you want

The player stands at the net. Cones are set in the middle, on the deuce and ad side. The coach feeds balls to forehand side and the player executes stop-volleys, hitting into different target every time.

Volley Drills

Make it specific

Cones mark the doubles cross-court zone and the coach then feeds balls to the deuce side. The player hits forehand cross-court and tries to make the ball in between cones and the doubles sideline.

Doubles Drills

Neutral Ball

Coach and player rally together. Coach moves player around the court. Player has to respond to all the balls with deep shot to the middle of the court.

Forehand & Backhand Drill

No chance to attack

Cones create deep zone. The coach feeds balls to the forehand side and the player tries to hit all the balls behind the cones.

Forehand Drills

Use slice weapon against rival

Cones are set in the deep zone. The coach feeds balls to the backhand and the player hits a backhand slice aiming into deep zone.

Backhand Drills

Volley into the deep zone

The player stands at the net,whilst the coach feeds random balls. The player hits forehand/backhand volley into the deep zone (behind the cones).

<BR>The coach feeds the ball to team A, they then have to hit it into the target area cross court. <BR>-Player from team B hits down the line if possible, however if under pressure from the depth or pace of the shot,then player B should play cross court or down the middle.<BR>Team A are hitting mostly cross court.

Split the players into 2 equal groups, Both hitting forehands. Coach feeds left then right. Players have to move out to the ball and try to hit the ball into the coned are down the line. Play first team to score 10 points.

Deep Cross Court Forehand Fore...

4 players A, B, C, and D. 4 discs or cones are placed half way between the service line and the service box on each side of the court. Player A rallys with player B, and C with D (hitting cross court). Each player hits a deep forehand beyond the disc. The aim of the drill is to keep the rally going, stepping outside the line of the ball to return to your partner.

Cones are set in the deep corner (ad side). The player serves from the ad side and moves to the net, and the coach feeds the ball to the ad side. The player hits backhand half volley deep cross court and takes proper position at the net.

Players get into pairs. Each pair takes on another pair in a cross court competition. Players take it in turns to hit the ball deep into the coned area. Every time a ball is hit short the receiving player can hit a winner down the line to score a point. The players who hit the short ball can try to recover and return the down the line winner. If they manage to return the shot they do not lose a point. Next rally starts again.
