Netball: front position

The Super Shot has created a strategic dilemma that every shooter faces multiple times per quarter: take the two-goal attempt from range, or work the ball closer for a higher-percentage standard shot?

The answer isn't always obvious. The wrong decision - in either direction - costs goals. The best shooters develop a framework for making this choice under pressure, quickly and consistently.

The Expected Value Calculation

At its simplest, shot selection is a maths problem. Expected value equals probability of success multiplied by reward.

Super Shot example: A 50% shooter from the Super Shot zone has an expected value of 1.0 goals per attempt (0.5 x 2).

Standard shot example: An 85% shooter from under the post has an expected value of 0.85 goals per attempt (0.85 x 1).

In this scenario, the Super Shot is mathematically superior despite the lower percentage. The threshold varies by shooter, but generally: if your Super Shot percentage exceeds 42.5% of your standard percentage, the Super Shot has higher expected value.

Beyond the Maths

Pure expected value ignores important context. Several factors should influence shot selection:

Game State

Down by 6 with 2 minutes left? Aggressive Super Shot hunting is necessary - you need multiple two-goal swings to catch up. Up by 4 with 90 seconds remaining? Conservative standard shots protect the lead without gifting turnovers.

Time on the Clock

Early in Power 5, there's time to work the ball and create better opportunities. With 30 seconds left, a clean Super Shot look might be your last chance to score twice.

Defender Position

A Super Shot with no defender pressure is different from one with hands in your face. Read the defence before committing to range.

Rebounding Setup

If your GA is well-positioned for an offensive rebound, a Super Shot miss has a safety net. If not, the turnover risk increases.

The Decision Framework

Train your shooters to ask three questions before every shot during Power 5:

1. Am I balanced? A rushed or off-balance Super Shot rarely goes in. If you're not set, work closer or reset the attack.

2. What's the defence giving me? Tight defence at the edge suggests working inside. A defender who sags offers a cleaner Super Shot look.

3. What does the game need? Does the scoreboard demand risk, or reward patience? Make the decision that serves the team, not your stats.

Recognising Good vs Bad Super Shot Opportunities

Good Super Shot opportunity:

  • Clean catch in the zone with time to set
  • Defender more than arm's length away
  • Balanced stance, comfortable body position
  • Support positioned for potential rebound

Bad Super Shot opportunity:

  • Catching on the move or off-balance
  • Tight defensive pressure on the release
  • Rushed attempt with defender closing
  • No rebound support, high turnover risk

Training Shot Selection

Decision drills. Coach feeds ball to shooter in Super Shot zone with varied defensive pressure. Shooter must call "shot" or "work" instantly. Rewards for correct decisions based on pre-defined criteria.

Game state scenarios. Set up specific situations - down 4 with 1 minute left, up 2 with 3 minutes remaining - and let shooters practice decision-making in context.

Video review. Analyse Super Shot attempts from training and matches. Was the decision correct? Was the execution the problem, or the choice?

Team-Level Strategy

Shot selection shouldn't be purely individual. Teams should develop guidelines:

  • Which shooter has the best Super Shot percentage? She gets priority on long-range attempts.
  • At what score margin do we become aggressive/conservative with Super Shots?
  • When do we deliberately work for Super Shot opportunities vs standard shots?

These guidelines reduce decision burden on individuals and create consistency across the team.

The Discipline to Pass Up Shots

Perhaps the hardest skill is passing up a Super Shot opportunity that looks tempting but isn't optimal. Shooters are trained to shoot - resisting that instinct requires discipline.

Frame it positively: passing up a 35% Super Shot for an 80% standard shot isn't weakness - it's smart netball. The best shooters have the confidence to decline bad opportunities.

Evolving Your Approach

Track your shooters' conversion rates from different zones. The data should inform decision-making. If a shooter converts 60% from range, she should be hunting Super Shots. If she's at 30%, she should be more selective.

This data also helps opponents scout you. Vary your approach to remain unpredictable while staying within expected value guidelines.

Shot selection in the Super Shot era is a skill that separates good shooters from great ones. Train it deliberately, review it constantly, and trust the framework when the pressure is on.

Contact rule question: If a defender places their hand under the ball...

The shooter / goal attack has taken up position to shoot. The defensive player takes up position behind the shooter, the three feet rule is applied and no other infringement is present. The defensive player places her hand beneath the ball, not touching the ball or the player. The shooter brings the ball down to take the shot and touches the hand of the defensive player. Is this taken as contact and how strictly is this rule applied? Lee-Anne

Let's say our GK secures a rebound, pivots and looks to pass to WD who is holding her position on the circle edge (leaving no space for anyone to get in front of her).Is the WA from the other team allowed to then place her outside foot in between our WDs feet and effectively bully / push her way so that half her body is in front of our WD? Coming forward and getting fre...

I have a player who tends to hang back behind her partner in games, and then tries to move into position to receive a pass. She signals that she is free but doesn't move quickly enough into position so often loses the ball.No matter how many times we work on this at training, when it comes to the actual games she reverts to her standard play but then gets upset when nobody passes to her. She is fast losing confidence as the other players on the team are all moving beyond her level and she is aware of this. Any ideas?

how to protect yourself as gs/...

I was playing GS today and marked by a very tall GK. As I was watching the ball come forward, I moved to the top of the D but she didn't stay with me and remained behind me. I couldn't see her and was unsure if I should stay close to her to be aware of where I could move, or to just move where I wanted. My back was turned to her as I was facing where the ball was, should I be side on to see her in my peripheral vision but not stay with her, or should I keep marking her to hold her then come forward when appropriate? Hi everyone, I'm a GS/GA and I shoot well but I struggle to make opportunities for myself to shoot in games. It is slightly better when I play GS if i stay in the circle, but when I play GA or come out, it has happened that I haven't shot at all. I either get blocked from going in the circle straight away or am too slow to position myself. Could anyone give me some pointers about basic movement? I have watching videos where players roll/cut - if a player is marking you face on and blocking you from entering the D, would that be how I get around them? I am having trouble with one of my players who is a very valuable mid court player, yet obseses about wanting to play GS, not only is she the shortest in the team but when she has played GS she struggles to get in front to receive the ball. No matter how much I explain that the mid court is where she needs to be she wont let it up & even has a nasty attitude towards other players. I have very good shooters in the team, how do I explain without upsetting her but in a way that will get through to her that shooting is not for her this season??

Hi all, My daughter is about to start coaching for the first time and it's expected she'll have a group of 10 years olds in C or D grade. I'm struggling to remember what her capabilities were at that age and she's looking for some suggestions for drills to start off with until she gets a handle on where they're at. Is anyone currently working with kids around that age/ability bracket? Does anyone know if any of the weekly drills are aimed at beginners/introductory levels? How do I stop my players from ...

Hi I coach a great team of under 9s and when we do a driving drill we start with "pitter patter feet" (like a very fast low jog on spot) then when i say GO they drive forward. However a lot of them step back with their foot then drive forward. Any tricks out there to get just going forward? Is it just the foot they start on like the strong foot? Or something else?

How do I stop face marking..? ...

Help... I am new to coaching netball albeit have played for years. My experience in playing comes from being an attacker so trying to work with my defence, is proving tricky. The issue I have is that both my GD and GK face mark. I have tried numerous drills in training however as soon as they get in to a match, they revert back to face marking. When the ball is coming down the court, I encourage them to stay on their toes, side marking and moving in front and round the back however when the GA or the GS moves out, the face marking starts. Coach comments - critical and ...

What should a player do when they are in a rep team & committed but the coach makes comments after a carnival game like ''why did they bother coming if they are going to play like that" It's rep level, so the time commitment is big for parents & players and these comments visibly affect the team morale. It's also said at the side of the court where everybody can hear. My daughters shooting gets noticeably wobbly after these pep talk. They are given no specific guidance on how to improve their technique or change their game. Good players who are not difficult have left the rep team partially because of these types of comments. It is nearing the end of rep season & I fear if my daughter speaks up now, there will be negative consequences for her & and if I speak up, I will be seen to be an interfering parent. I know coaching is a difficult gig as I have coached for several years. Granted, a good game is acknowledged, but the damage has been done. They are 13/14year old girls and generally, not too sassy. The girls train for club & rep, play an extra game for rep each Saturday, umpire & practice outside of rep training, so they are a committed team. Several of the parents in the team coach & we all find this style to be counterproductive. Any suggestions?

Short GS needs strategies for ...

Hi, have a short GS in Rep. She has practiced and applied lots of strategies including holding, clearing out and reoffering, dodging and popping in space right in front of defence to take pass, triangles, holding and turning. She has to work super hard because of her lack of height against much taller defences. For the most part, she does really well, however there are still times when she seems to get stuck doing a little sideways dance behind the GK when she comes across a GK who is particularly good at holding front position, shadowing and anticipating the dodge. Does anyway have any suggestions? I am wondering if telling her to change her starting position in the circle, slightly to one side of the circle when the ball is on it''s way down to give her a definite space to drive to and then create doubt by sometimes driving out and sometimes driving back? Would love some ideas to try.

Footwork problem! | Sportplan

Hi, I have a lady in my team who keeps getting pulled up for footwork (dragging)! i cant get to many matches and she doesnt do it in training, i videoed a game to see what the problem was and it seems that she has a very wide landing stance when on the run, almost as if she needs to take another step, ive tried to encourage her (and done a drill) to land on outside feet and small step footwork patterns etc but nothing seems to be working!
