Divide your players into 2 teams.
The attackers (blue) have to try and keep the ball, passing from the left side of the playing area and taking it through the defender's territory into the 'restricted area'. Attackers must complete 10 passes before being allowed to enter the restricted zone - if they manage to do this they score a point.
To prevent the attackers from scoring though the defenders have to use the 3 stages of defending to gain possession of the ball.
Set up this drill without giving any coaching points. After they have been playing for a few minutes stop the game and then ask both teams for feedback.
What was the most effective way to gain possession of the ball? When did they use each stage of defending? Why is it important for the whole team to defend? What worked well?
Asking your players to evaluate themselves is a great form of introspection - getting players to think hard about their own game and performance.
Encourage players to be vocal and communicate with each other. Loud defenders are very intimidating and can cause hesitation and uncertainty in their opponents.
Defenders should dictate where they want their opponents to go. Frustrate the attacker.
Develop your player's ability to dictate their opponents movement and apply pressure to the ball carrier.
Develop your player's defensive ability, allowing them to practice their 3 stages of defence in order to force errors and successfully obtain interceptions.
Develop your players understanding and use of fast, accurate footwork to make successful interceptions or force an error.
Players work in groups of 5 - 3 passing players on the outside of the triangle, one attacking player in the middle and one defender who is marking the central player.
The defender has to prevent the attacker from getting free to receive a pass from the outside players.
In pairs, one player moves quickly from left to right, using small side steps while their partner tries to keep up.
Both players are facing each other.
Every player is involved in this defensive exercise.
Once the player in the center has the ball the drill can begin again.
Starting on a backline, players move the ball through the court ending up with the shooter who puts a shot up. Players should aim to pass the ball in the following order: GK, GD, WD, C, WA, GA, GS. If WD had the ball for example, ideally the C should receive it, but WA also needs to offer in a different space for the ball, as well as the GD providing a back up offer if the C is not available. There should always be a back-up offer from the player who has just received the ball, as well as a minimum of two offers from down the court. Players should aim to time their movement so they are reading off each other.
2 teams play a normal game of netball. The only difference being that every player who receives the ball has to pass the ball within 2 seconds. If they fail to do so that player must put the ball on the floor for the other team to collect before the game can continue.
The Player with the ball passes to player in space on the left. The player receiving the ball jumps into the air, prior to pass and turns in the air to receive ball, finishing up facing backwards to return ball to player in the same queue. This player then passes diagonally to the right.
*AUDIO DESCRIPTION ON* Set up in 2 lines facing each other. 2 working players out of the lines back to back facing the line they have come from and with a ball each. Working players pass back to their lines then run behind the front player in the line (one with the ball). They are then to drive on a digonal to the middle of the 2 lines and receive a pass. Working players are now facing each other with a ball each and pass with left hands to each other receiving the opposite ball. Players then pass a high ball to their right (the line they have come from) and drive to the left (other players line) to intercept the other ball before it reaches the line. Players to join the back of the line and a new working pair to start in the middle.
Two way game of netball with 2 teams and 2 balls! Each GK starts the game at their end with a throw-in from the back line. Each team has to look after their ball and give their GS opportunity to score. If their GS scores the ball goes back to the opposition's GK.
Equipment: 2 balls, half court space, 6+ players. 4 players stand as posts in a square as set out in video. Approximatly half way down 1/3 and near halfway. 2 other players, the workers, start on the baseline with the balls, one each. Workers pass ball out to first posts on a diagonal and follow the pass to recieve a short pass from first post. Workers then pass straight on to the second posts and follow the pass. Second post players toss a high ball for the workers to catch. Workers stay put and the second post players run down court to recieve a long pass to the point of the first posts. First posts move down and will become the workers in the next round.
Feeder, 2 attackers, 3 defenders. Feeder starts play from the Centre Circle. The attacker runs forward off the third line into the middle third to receive the ball, marked by a defender. They then pass a lateral ball to the feeder who has moved out to the side, where there is another defender acting as a 3ft mark. The attacker runs into a space in the end third to receive the ball back. When they have received the ball again they pass to an attacker in the circle, who is also marked. The defender in the circle (GK) can help the other defender if they get shut out. However if both defenders get drawn to the attacker then the feeder can pass straight to the GS in the circle.
Split your group into 8s (2 balls are needed for this pass and move exercise). The balls start on opposite corners and are passed clockwise. Each worker, after having passed the ball, swaps places with the player across the square that passed the ball at the same time.
Split the group into 6s with one ball per group. Red player 1 throws the ball to Blue player 1, and then receives a return pass while moving forward. Red player 1 then throws the ball to Blue player 2, who then passes onto Red player 2. Red player 1 takes place of Blue player 2 and Blue player 2 goes to back of queue. Red player 2 repeats practice in opposite direction. Progression - The posts move to receive the ball each time.
