I have thoroughly enjoyed using your site to help me with my coaching plans for my under 9's netball team.
What should I do on a first coaching session ? I don't want the girls to get bored, i want them to want to come back next week.
A am a new coach of a year 6 team. I have two girls that did not play netball last year and their level of play is not up to the rest of the team. I want to encourage them but they are either very slow and/or disinterested. When the whistle is blown it seem to take them ages to move of the line for a centre pass. The other girls are long gone. How can I light a fire and get them moving quickly? Thanks!
my team always sit down and they never want to run so what do I do. we lose nearly every game and they blame the coach but its their own fault
I will be regularly coaching a group of Back to Netball ladies (aged 16 plus) and have been told that there are approx. 30 signed up (prob end up with 20 regulars). I have a session planned for them tonight as a starter for ten but I am conscious that with such numbers when it comes to court time at the end of a session e.g. game time some won't be able to participate on court. For tonight (and partly because I'm told these ladies are new to netball) I'm going to be getting those sat off court to do some observation of basic rules e.g. give each a card with a rule on it and see if they spot anything during the game play. Some can also help with scoring. Then I'm having people subbed on and off every 5 mins so all get some game time. Are there any other suggestions from people about managing such a large group with just one court available? The rest of the session is fine as they can all join in the warm up, skills sessions and warm down.
How can you make under 13s, under 15s, and under 17s training different as some players play on more than 1 team.
I have played netball pretty much all of my life, but this week I will be starting to coach year 2's (age 6/7/8). I am sure they will all be new to the sport, and I could really use some advice on what to do. Any tips, or training excersices, or videos I could watch would be amazing.
My team of year 4s have been playing together for 2 years, some players are in their third season. They have mixed natural talents but they are progressing well, listen at training and they all try their best to putting into practice what they have learned at training on game day. After a terrible first season when they did not win a single game, they have progressed into winning a few games this season, and bar one game have been competitive against their opposition every week (which is all you can ask for, eh?)All bar one girl. She rarely turns up to training, her parents tell me she is unwell each week. On game days she arrives only a few minutes before the game and when it is raining or she is playing a position she doesn't like, she either doesn't try at all or even sometimes wanders off the court half way though a quarter! My honest thought is that her (and her parents) are letting the rest of the team down, by not coming to training she is not learning the new skills and then on game day she doesn't seem to be enthused anyway. The frustrating thing is that when she does try, when she does turn up to training for a few weeks in a row, she is actually a decent player!So my question is: do I keep her in the general team rotation (when she has to play a key position there is a definite hole) or do I 'punish' her for not coming to training by playing her in less key positions and having her take more off-court time than all the other girls who are trying? The other girls are starting to notice and ask "Why"...any words of wisdom? They all go to school together, apparently she is the same in class.....
My associate coach and I disagree on whether U/10s should play different positions or focus/settle on one, maybe two. I don't want to put the girls in a box at such a young age but I also don't want a Jack of all Trades situation. They are still developing so much that I feel I'll be doing them a disservice by just putting them in the same position every week. The assistant coach says if we move them around we're not going to do as well but that is where the participation vs performance comes in for me. Surely at this age development is more important than winning?No coach likes to lose but I don't want to win at the expense of them experiencing different positions. What do you guys suggest? I am coaching a team of 8-9yr olds one of which is deaf. I am having problems getting anything to help me with this. Also I am wanting to print off some simple warmup drills eg basic run to first third walk back knees up walk back etc but have picturs for her aswell, but the session planner is more advance than this- I am wanting to do the same warm up for the start of each training and game. Any help ould be fantastic!!!
We have lost a player due to injury and now have only 6. Any tips on best way to train and play with only 6 players
We are playing summer comp (13 yr old girls). We have one shooter with a broken finger, and usually one other is injured or sick each week leaving us weekly with 5 players only. Which 2 positions do I not fill? Another coach told me WA and WD but I feel it just gives us both a weak attacking and a week defending team. I'm now thinking of putting the girls in attack only (GS GA WA C) with one girl in defence- GD ( and our centre covering the WD position from the other teams centre pass) This way we increase our chances of scoring from our own centre pass and still have someone defending their GA and WA from their centre pass in the hope of a intercept. I am coaching a little net set go team (set tier) with ages 5-8. Usually I coach high school girls. A mum of one of the 7 yr olds just messaged me with this: "i was just wondering If you have any tips to help us get Miss S enthused about netball, she isn't enjoying it but wants to "give it more time" (her words)." We only have a half hour training session before we play as no one else will coach but this is the only time I can do training and there are players from another town so this is the best option for everyone. We play a couple of warm up drills/games and practice 1 skill ready for our game. I have covered the basics of passing and footwork so far. None of my team have ever played before, but 4 of them did the net set go - net tier last year. The girl has only played 2 games so far as we have had a bye. So far she has had a go at positions GK, GD, GS, GA, and WA. She is the tallest girl in the team and so tends to get a fair amount of the ball. Any ideas on what to suggest to this mum?
Hi I have a player who has recently taken up another sport and cannot attend training at all but can attend the weekend game. We are half way through the season. I am not sure whether its fair to give this player as much game time as the other girls and just wanted to know what other coaches might do in this situation. Thanks
I play school and state netball as a GK/GD, when my other player is defending the GS or GA, I hold on to her defenders leg/hand for an extra lean. Because I'm quite larger and taller than most girls and already have a pretty good lean, when I ask my defender to hold me so that i am closer to deflecting the shot, she uses two of her hands and her body strength to hold me. My coach told me not to do this because she believed I wasn't allowing myself nor my other player to get an intercept or rebound, even though we had gotten most rebounds and had gotten a few intercepts with this technique. Is this an disadvantage or advantage to us?

I have taken over coaching a 15/un open team about 8 months ago. The focus for improvement was to work on fitness. They are much fitter than when we started and now can finish off a game. There are 4 very good players and 4 average players. I need help with the attitude of one of the girls. She half-hearted takes direction, doesn't play well unless she plays in the position she wants to, constantly whispers negatives to others at training and is constantly giving us intolerable looks if she doesn't like what she hears. I could go on and on. And yes she is one of the average players. We have 3 coaches in the team and we have never come across such a rude girl. In my day you would get a ball in head if you weren't looking and listening to the coach! Please help with how we can engage this girl.
I have a team of 8 10-11 year old girls. 5 of them have great skill level and are very enthusiastic the other 3 are quite lazy and are not up the skill level of the others. I am finding it really quite hard at training to engage these 3 while not holding the others back. It is also hard to place them on game day without the others getting frustrated. Any ideas. HELP
