A am a new coach of a year 6 team. I have two girls that did not play netball last year and their level of play is not up to the rest of the team. I want to encourage them but they are either very slow and/or disinterested. When the whistle is blown it seem to take them ages to move of the line for a centre pass. The other girls are long gone. How can I light a fire and get them moving quickly? Thanks!
its probably that age group, wheres it not cool to be interested, they are lazy, or maybe it wasnt their idea to play netball. maybe sit the group down and find out what their reason to want to play netball is, and you in turn can tell them what your reason is to coach. that will at least help you find out what direction you need to take you plan to.
if its just that they are lazy, not wanting to look interested in caring about something, maybe remind the team that to succeed you all have to do your best or the whole team is affected. so everyone has to do their best to encourage those who are having a bad day, or lagging behind.
if they are being forced to play by their families, maybe talk to their parents and let them know that it is unfair for all those concerned, as if these girls dont even want to be there, nothing you do will inspire them to want to participate..
on that note, it could be that the dynamics of the group is already established, and these girls feel intimidated by the rest of the girls. and maybe without you knowing, they could have been bullied, or excluded by the team. this will need to be addressed, and maybe some team building days need to be organised to break down any clicks within the team.
if the girls genuinely wish to be part of the team, and its a matter of skill they are lacking, well thats your job as a coach, to come up with ways for them to improve, and be useful part of the team. try splitting them up and do relay type of drills where its team vs team. i like footwork skills, and ball skills to do this, as they are pretty simple and easy, but the competition side helps motivate the girls to move fast.
to get them off the line faster, you could always practice center pass breaks, and the last one off the line has to do pushups/situps. burpees, whateever you like. dont pair them up with the best in the team, but they will soon want to move their butts to avoid the extra work....lol
but the first port of call is finding out the why part as to why they dont wish to participate and support the teaby doing their best.
hope this helps.
That is really great advice. Thanks so much. I will give it a go. %3A)
