4 v 4 + 4 Possession Possessio...

3 teams of 4 with 2 working together to keep the ball away from the other. 1 team is on the outside and 1 in the middle, making it an 8 v 4 possession game. The defensive team is aiming to win the ball, if they do they work with the team on the outside.Progression: If the defence win the ball, they carry the ball out of the box to kill the ball. Teams that lost possession do 10 press-ups.

Three teams of 2. Two teams combine to play against the 3rd team (in the animation this is the white and gold team playing against the blue team). If the 3rd team successfully gets the ball, the team that lost the ball is in the middle and the other two teams combine to continue.

2 teams play a 6v6 game, with a left and a right central zone marked out with cones. In each of the central zones there should be 1 player from each team. Players who are defending (on both teams) can only stay in their starting zones, whereas players who are attacking can run across zones to support the attack and create the overloads (2v1).

Set up a line of cones about 5 to 8 metres away from the boards forming a long thin pitch. Make two end zones 2 teams of 4 nominate a player to stand in their side's allocated end zones. The player in the end zone is the support player and can be used to keep possession. The aim of the game is for one of the teams to pass or dribble into their end zone.

Create 2 end zones either side of a line. 2 players are in each end zone and 2 defenders on the line. The players in the end zones can pass the ball to each other laterally but the aim is to try and pass the ball from one end zone to the other, without the ball being intercepted by the defenders who can only defend on the line. See how many passes the teams can score against the defenders. When the defenders have intercepted the ball 3 times the players who played the last pass change over and become the defenders.

This system gives support to the backline as well as the midfield. It relies on the 2 forwards to do a lot of running in defence and play further forward when their team is in possession. When to use: If your team is very fit and want to force the other team back by creating overloads in your defence and midfield.

Have 2 equal teams and 2 goals in a 23 m area. Players play a 7v7 game with the following rule: When a player is in possession they are not allowed to run with the ball - they can only pivot on the spot while looking for a pass. Players have to move into space to create options for a team-mate on the ball so they can look to receive the ball. The defending team can only intercept and put pressure on the player in possession of the ball (no closer then 2 metres).

Players in possession of the ball score a point by passing the ball anti-clockwise (past the left foot of the defender) and the defender scores a point by forcing the players in possession to pass the ball clockwise (over the forehand of the defender) The defender wins possession of the ball by making the ball go all the way round clockwise.

4 Players have to pass the ball around the outside of a square of cones in any direction. After a few minutes remove the cones. The players have to now continue passing around, keeping the same distance to each other as if the cones were still there. IMPORTANT: If one player misses the ball all players have to run to where the ball has gone and continue passing, remaining the same distance apart as before.

The team with the ball must try and keep possession of the ball. Only 2 players from each team are allowed to be inside the area. 1 player can move anywhere on the outside of the area. To involve this player, the players inside the area have to pass the ball to the outside player. On doing so, the outside player can come into the area and the player that passed the ball becomes the new outside player.
