Sharon Garner Coach, England

DESCRIPTION

In pairs with a ball and 4 cones/spots (or use court lines) to mark a small working area (try 3m x 3m). The feeder starts with the ball in hand with back to the attacking player. The attacking player can start moving within the space, angled and straight. As the feeder throws the ball up in the air to turn and catch in the air, the working player times her movement so she drives out of the square to receive a direct ball. This can be anywhere outside the square as long as it is angled or straight (not lateral) and ball is taken on the drive. Repeat x 5 then swap. Progression: As above but this time around the attacking player is working outside of the cones and is looking to drive onto a pass within the square.

COACHING POINTS

Don't allow the feeder to hold the ball too long. It's important the attacking player is making meaningful movement but not for too long! Meaningful is taking feet under the body, angled and ready to go at any time; it shouldn't be all at a high pace but likewise not on the spot! Encourage players to drive into different spaces outside the square (inside as your add the progression). Eyes always on ball. Timing of drive at pace and clear angle for the feeder to deliver. Taking feet all the way onto ball and landing balanced.
