3 Player Dig Set and Smash Drill

Feed to player 2 who defensive digs the ball to player 1 to set to player 2, who smashes the ball to player 3 who defensive digs the ball to player 2 to set to player 3.

Dig

The dig is a defensive shot played when the ball is driven hard towards the waist or below of a player.The ball has a lot of energy and pace so the defender does not need to put energy into the ball like a forearm pass, but ensure that they are still when the attacker contacts the ball and they contact their defense with their forearms and angle the ball upwards to a target of the middle of court.

Jumping to Spike

Players move towards the net as the coach feeds the ball up. Players must position themselves close to the net and aim to catch the ball at the peak height, with both arms up in the air.

Player 1 sets the ball to player 2 who sets the ball back to player 1 then defensive digs the ball up in the air to player 3 who sets to player 2 to smash back to player 1.

1 Techniques

Volley Pass

The first player starts the game with a throw over the net. The two players on the other side of the net communicate - with one moving towards the net and the other who volleys the ball while their partner moves to meet the ball. The player that has moved to the net faces their partner to receive and return the pass. The player who first passed the ball moves towards the net and points to where they want the next high pass to be placed. The player then volleys the ball over the net. After this both players should return to a side by side playing position ready to play defence and start the drill again.

The smash is the main attacking shot used in volleyball and is probably one of the hardest moves to master.

Working in pairs the feeder spikes the ball to the worker. The worker has to dig it back to the feeder, and prepare to receive the next shot. Repeat for 10 spikes and then rotate.

2 players stand on either side of the net. One player overhand passes to their team mate who sets the ball back for a spike down the line.On the other side of the net, one blocker stands at the net and attempts to cover a cross court shot, while a digger is at the back of the court, and has to attempt to dig the ball either to their team mate or back over the net.

Players work in threes starting from a dig and each of them assigns a role: receiver, setter and spiker. As soon as the receiver digs the ball, they run under the net to change the side of the court. Every player changes side when they hit the ball, with the spiker being the last player to move over.

Players approach and jump and imitate a spike by holding the non-hitting hand up and hitting it as it it were a ball.

Players line up in backcourt area. The feeder throws the ball to either Zone 1, 6 or 5. Players' must dig the ball back to the feeder. However, the player standing in Zone 6 must move to receive the balls sent to Zone 1 and 5. The player standing in zone 5 must move to receive the ball thrown into 1 or 6 and so on. The two players not in the zonal area the ball has been thrown to must communicate with each other to see who will return the ball to the feeder.

One player stands in Zone 3 and spikes the ball into the court. The other players, starting from behind the sideline, take it in turns to receive the ball, return it to the player acting as the feeder and runs to Zone 1. Once all the players are in Zone 1, the player feeding continues to spike the ball into the court but the other players must change positions from side to side in the backcourt.
