Catching the edged ball

Setup the practice as shown. The bowler throws the ball underarm towards the wicketkeeper. The batsman can either deflect the ball, leave it alone or swing at the ball and miss it (on purpose). Rotate positions after ten throws. Wicket keeper may want to wear a helmet as a safety precaution.

Group coaching for the back foot defence

Setup the practice as shown. Each player has 8-10 balls, then all rotate clockwise. In the first round of 8-10 players must play every other shot with the top hand only. Make the last round competitive: try to survive all 8-10 balls without getting out. If you are out, change round. On the practice round, players get another ball if one goes wide. On the competitive round, have 8-10 balls whether players leave the ball or play and miss. If a player deliberately plays an attacking shot he loses that round of 8-10 balls. (Be strict on this point).

Group coaching for the back foot drives

Rules of the practice 1. All shots to be executed with two hands (top hand dominant).2. Each player has 8-10 balls, then all rotate clockwise.3. Give groups 2-3 coaching points to work on.4. Have about 3-4 rounds each (depending on time limit).5. Make the last round competitive; see who can hit all balls through target area along the ground. Fielders must stop the ball.6. If players leave the ball they get another ball. If they play and miss they do not.7. If players delibrately play cross-batted shots on leg side they lose that round. (Be strict on this point - safety).8. If a player hits the ball into the air, over the fielders, it does not count and they lose that ball.9. On the competitive round, if a player gets out, all change.Do not set up groups too close to one another - think safety! Coach positions himself where he can monitor all groups safely.

Front foot batting

Group coaching for the front foot drive

Set the practice up as shown. Each player has 8-10 balls, then all rotate clockwise. The coach calls bat up before feeding the ball for the batsman to drive the ball through the v shaped cones. If the batsman leaves the ball they get another ball. If they play and miss they do not. If players deliberately play cross-batted shots on leg side they lose that round. (Be strict on this point). If players hit the ball into the air, over the fielders, it does not count and they lose that ball. Make the last round competitive: who can hit all balls through target area along the ground? Fielders must stop the ball. On the competitive round, if a player gets out, all change round.

Roller Ball

Two Teams of 6-11 people try to partner along the ground throwing the ball to each other. They are not allowed to move once they have the ball and to score they must hit the oppositions stumps. No one is allowed in the the square of cones at any time.

Running Between the Wickets - Catchers vs Runners

OrganisationOrganise a group as shown in the diagram. On the command " Yes " the batsman runs up and down the wicket. At the same time players in Team B throw and catch the ball to each other. As the batsman completes the 2nd run the next batsman sets off. Count the total number of catches made when the last better completes the final run. Teams change over and repeat, the winning team is the one with the most catches.ProgressionRunning singles or threes.One handed catches.Rebound catching.Equipment: 2 bats, 2 marked creases a pitch length apart. 1 ball (size and colour may be varied). Lines/cones for catching positions.

Target Throwing and Hitting the Stumps

Set up as shown: two sets of stumps with a wicket keeper with a ball behind each. Two lines of players. The WK facing the two lines starts by throwing the ball out for player 1 to run out and catch Player 1 catches the ball and throws the ball over the stumps for the WK to catch. The second WK (player 4) now rolls the ball out for the fielder to run onto, gather and then throw at the stumps. Player 4 collects the ball and leaves it behind the stumps for the fielder. Players then rotate, with players 4 joining the back of the opposite line and player 1 taking up the role of second WK. Drill should be continuous.

Layout for the game1. Play as teams (5-8 a-side) or individuals (6-10 players).2. With chalk or disks, mark out the fielding positions available.3. Make sure the marks are 4 paces away from the batsman.4. Short leg must be slightly deeper: 5 paces.5. Slip or gully in normal position for cricket.6. Coach must feed when possible (to save arguments).7. Feed ball on one knee, 7 or 8 paces away.8. Encourage fielders to shout \"Howzat\" when a catch is taken.9. Set up the game and do a quick demonstration.10. Give a batting order.11. When using more than one team, make it a mini tournament. Winners play winners, losers play losers.

Back foot batting

On Drive from Set Position Fro...

Set up two cones half way down the wicket, one central and one leg side. Feed from around the wicket with a bobble feed. Batter to hit from the on drive set position, knees and feet facing down the wicket, and aiming for the two cones.  Back lift over first/second slip, hit a straight line through the ball to the target area. Batter to hold the shape, and take small steps towards the direction of the shot to the cone.

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. Feeder drops ball in front of batter (with arm out horizontally, standing on the off side of the batsman for safety purposes). Batter steps towards the ball, and aim to drive the ball on the second bounce/half volley, driving the ball on the ground through the target zones. Each group needs 6 tennis balls. 6 feeds per batter rotate clockwise. Drill is best done in nets (2 grounds per net in opposite directions) .Encourage players to wear at least batting gloves when doing this drill.

ONLY FOR MORE ADVANCED PLAYER Played to a length ball pitching on or outside line of the off stump Batter must be low in their position, with head pushed forwards towards the ball Extend arms upon impact. Batter must accelerate shoulders horizontally, and hit through the ball. Ball should look to be played infront of square, and if appropriate/safe to do can be hit aerially. The ball is only allowed to bounce once before hitting the target on the wall. The bowler collects the rebound and joins the back of the line before bowling again.

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. One batter and one feeder minimum required, with 6 tennis balls per pair/group. Each batter should be wearing a minimum of helmet and gloves on. This drill is designed to improve player's confidence against the short ball. Feeds should range from heights 1,2 and 3, and each batter should have 10 feeds before swapping over. Feeds are from a close range, under arm feed, without bouncing, from a kneeling position. The batter should be encouraged to learn to defend and/or evade at first, gaining confidence and getting them in a better position than before to attack after.
