Community | Spatial Awareness Drill

CAZ Player, England

DESCRIPTION

First Phase of drill 1) Split a third of the court into 5 spaces including a circle/ circle of cones in the middle. 2) 4 players Rule - Run into free space Do this for a minute and switch with next set of 4. If a player runs into the same space, then it’s the back player who can see all 3 players who needs to move. Second Phase of Drill - Add a Ball 1) Same as the first phase but using a ball to pass between the 4 players 1 ADDITIONAL RULE: Player can only pass to someone who is running. Note: When first teaching this drill, don’t worry too much about players footwork, remember the key skill your teaching is space awareness. Third Phase of Drill - Speed up passes As progression to the above - get the players to speed up their passing. Final Phase of the Drill Add 2 defenders and then 4 defenders to mark each player. It can be up to you how intense the defenders work and build up their intensity. Ensure the attackers do not dance on the spot, make sure they continue sprinting for space. This phase you may find that players stop using a particular area of the court I.e. the centre centre and the ball gets intercepted. Learning Point Example: If there is/are defenders here and the space is NOT being used by attackers - why would the attacker want to run in there if there are defenders? Ask you players to see if they can work it out. Answer: To distract the defenders. If an attacker keeps them busy in a space then other spaces with the third will become free or an attacker can run in front of the defender to receive the pass. Ensure your attackers drive into the middle when they decide to run the middle channel to distract or receive the ball. 3 in a 3rd with defenders This Drill then leads onto 3 in a third. 3 attackers 3 defenders feeder at each end of the court to restart play. Players stay in their allocation thirds and each attacker must receive a pass before pass to an attacker in the next third. Developing on this drill of passing the ball quickly and accurately timing their leads. This gets the players to time their drives, get into space and read the play.
