Defence (S1): Open and Closed Part 2

DESCRIPTION

Building on part 1 still in groups of 3 with ball; feeder, attacker and defender

Working in a small rectangle/square, we now add the width option for attacker

• Defender tracking the attacker up and down promoting the delivery of the high and wide ball (open or closed - vary or go with preferred)
• When the attacker receives the ball, they turn to look down the court.
• Defender angles their arms over to defend the "inside" line.
• The attacker returns the ball to the feeder.
• The defender steps up angled to prevent/avoid the front cut, then releases to track once again.
• If the attacker then back cuts, the defender must open up their tracking (get the attacker on their back) to maintain the vision of the ball and attempt the intercept.

Progression: Take onto Court

For example:

• GA driving out for the ball then trying to enter the circle
• WA on the centre pass, allow to land, then keep her wide (don't allow her to access top of circle)
• Backlines / Sidelines: causing pressure so having to go down the sideline or causing a "void" to force a long cross court ball

COACHING POINTS

• Feet under body, small steps, balanced, upright position
• Avoid side-stepping or backward step movement and leaning in.
• Eyes up to watch opposition and the ball
• Remain dogged in defence - track, angles, arms over, step up, release, track
