Rugby Drill Demonstration
Tell the players the following:
- On your whistle the ball carrier and the support player come forward off their cones.
- The ball carrier passes the ball to either their left or right (not forward). It is easier to decide the pass direction and roles in advance e.g. one ball will always travel left - and one ball will always travel right.
- When a ball carrier has finished their pass - they join the end of the opposite line.
- Players keep working within the Wide grid until you should tight, they then move into the inner grid. In this grid space is very limited and players will pop the ball (again not forward).
- Players keep working within the inner grid until told to move out wide again.
- Keep the tempo high and have fun.
Don't feel that you have to focus on all of the following coaching points, you may have your own. Select the points that most closely match your overall training and session goals.
- Keep the tempo of this exercise high.
- Good communication is vital to define roles, position, expectations, direction of the pass, the type of the pass, the time of the pass etc.
- Communication should be efficient, effective, and encouraging.
- Mistakes will happen, while we work to minimize mistakes - don't over focus on them! If you do your players may well magnify their own mistakes. What's important is the next pass, the next catch! You as a coach have to give the players the freedom to make mistakes, you also have the responsibility for helping players adjust their passing style and decision making etc. to minimize the possibility that the pass will not go astray.
- Passes need to be weighted correctly in terms of speed, distance, and accuracy.
- Players choose to pass when it is correct to do so.
- Players do not spin the ball when there is no need.
- Players choose to pop when it is correct to do so.
- Players get up on the balls on their feet, side stepping, spinning etc. to avoid contact.
- Players scan what they see in front of them, they keep their head up and make decisions based on what they see.
- Have fun and set realistic targets so that players experience success.
