Hi everyone, i was wondering if anyone has any good flying interception drills that can be progressed and overloaded? Need some drills for my GCSE PE!
Hi Lottie-Emily,
I have attached a good interception drill below, the drill is simple but when completed at a high intensity it can be extremely effective. The way to progress this drill is to:
1) Ensure you are passing to the player driving straight, not the player intercepting the ball
2) Mix up the passes given (anywhere) - e.g. a small dropped ball, so the player intercepting has to react to the ball quickly
Alternatively, there are a number of good drills below:
- Interception Group Drill - Similar to the drill above, the same progressions apply
- Ball and Hole - a fun drill which will get your players working in partnership to promote successful interceptions. To progress the drill add more players to the circle to make it larger. Also, you can add more defence into the circle, they will then have to be more spatially aware
- Intercept the Compass - A more complex drill that will get your defenders really thinking. You can lower the ability by having only one defender work, as they will only have to consider themselves or progress the drill by adding another defender to ensure they are considering one another.
Hope this helps.

Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
