I am trying to find a video of this skill to show players how to pass around strong over the ball long arm defence to avoid getting the pass deflected. Any links or ideas?
Hello Karen,
In a recent session of the week we worked on developing passing power. This plan is still available to view for full members (one week from date of writing).
If you are looking to improve passing have a look at our passing category to find practices to improve your players' passing technique. These practices contain coaching points to improve technique such as stepping into the pass and ensuring the arm is fully straightened after the pass for maximum power.
Hope these links and tips help!
Hi Karen. Watching any high level games on TV and how they overcome high hands over is an excellent training resource. Look for techniques e.g. fakes (used continuously), eyes down court pass to the side, pirvot step toward defender to protect passing side and bounce/sling pass around them, high overhead passes etc. It is also the responsibility of the receivers to make effective leads to maximise passing opportunities, no point in leading into an area immediately behind defender if passer can't see or tell where the lead is going. Most of the drills on Sportplan which involve passing can be adapted to practice specific techniques to meet your training goals. Good luck.
correction...that should read 'pivot' step not 'pirvot'
in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
