Is foot dragging an offence

ANSWERS
Jack GrundyOther, England

In netball, dragging the feet is commonly referred to as "footwork." Footwork rules in netball dictate how a player can move and pivot while in possession of the ball. Violating these rules can result in a turnover of possession to the opposing team. Here are some scenarios in netball where dragging the feet (footwork violations) can result in an offense:

  1. Stepping With the Ball: In netball, a player who is in possession of the ball must establish a clear pivot foot (the foot that remains planted) and may only lift the other foot to pivot on it. If a player drags or lifts both feet off the ground before releasing the ball, it's considered a stepping violation, resulting in a free pass for the opposing team.
  2. Receiving the Ball: When a player receives a pass, they must land on one foot while keeping the other foot off the ground until they release the ball. If both feet land simultaneously or the foot that lands first is lifted before the ball is released, it's a footwork violation.
  3. Landing Off-Balance: If a player loses balance and drags their foot after receiving the ball, it can result in a footwork violation.
  4. Shuffling Feet While Holding the Ball: If a player holding the ball shuffles their feet without a clear pivot foot, it can lead to a footwork violation.
  5. Landing Outside the Court: If a player leaps for the ball and lands with one or both feet outside the court boundaries, it's considered an out-of-court violation.
  6. Stepping Out of Court and Back In: If a player steps out of the court while holding the ball and then steps back in before releasing the ball, it's a violation.
