Working the Body Angle: Defence (1)

I am currently coaching a senior college team and I have found Sportplan...
Kiri, Coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Working in pairs with a ball and in a small space.
  • Working player starts in the middle of the space, on toes ready to work
  • Feeder drops the ball to one of the front corners.
  • Working players runs onto ball, taking feet with her, to retrieve, stands to give a good pass back to the feeder.
  • The feeder immediately releases a liften pass to land in the back corner.
  • The working players turns hips inwards (to keep ball in view), runs to that back corner and we are looking for a vertica jump and/or balanced landing with the ball.
  • Practise 5 on each side.

Progression

  • The working player drives hard to any corner and the feeder releases the ball lifted to any other corner. the working player has to adjust and drive hard to collect and land balanced.

COACHING POINTS

  • Feet under body, no lunging, take them all the way with you for both passes.
  • Use of arms in running to aid with momentum. Reaching out to grab ball in at earliest opportunity but NOT running with arms out stretched!
  • Think about the body angle on the run - hip and feet in direction of travel but body/head open to view the ball
