Back foot defence

3-5 people stand in each net, with one bowler and the others waiting to receive the ball. Each bowler bowls 24 balls with the batsman getting 3 consecutive balls. If the batsman decides to leaves one of the balls then they may have another ball. On receiving 3 balls the batsman must join the back of the queue.

Back foot defence: Playing in the V

Set up in groups as shown: one batsman, one wicket keeper, one feeder and one or two fielders. Mark out the V area with chalk or cones, approximately 4-5 metres wide. The batsmen has to try and hit the ball between the cones to score runs, if they do they get one run, if not, they lose two runs.

Catching Drill

Set up as shown in the diagram. Groups of 4. One ball per group. Three players form a triangle with one player in the middle. The first player throws the ball and the middle player tries to catch it, if they do then they can move on to the next person. If they drop it they have to throw the ball back to the same person and repeat this until they do catch it.

Group coaching for the back foot drives

Set up the practice as shown in the diagram. Target area: 10 metres away from the batsman (10-15 metres wide). Fielders stand between markers. Mark out parallel lines on the floor to show line and length of feed. The Feeder kneels on one knee, 10-12 paces from the batsman. Feeder says \"Bat up!\", then feeds a dart feed which bounces between the batsmans knee and waist height. (Throw from head height downwards, one bounce.

Conditioned games

Pick up and throw on the turn

1) runs out and picks up the stationary ball and throws over top to 2). 2) rolls the ball back out to 1), 1) replaces it and joins the back of the queue. When 1) tags 2), 2) then goes, 3) takes up position behind stumps. This can be done in a race against another group.

Ground fielding and throwing

Reflex Catching

Get your players to work with with one ball in groups of 3. The player with the ball stands behind the other two players, who have their back to him. On the command of "Now" the player with the ball throws the ball. The two catchers have to turn quickly and try and catch the ball before it bounces. Rotate players after 10 throws.

Roll Out, Collect and Throw

For larger groups, with a minimum of 5-10 players. The first player (1) rolls the ball out diagonally for the player on the same side as them (2) to run out to, intercept and flick at the opposite stump. A player on the other side (3) backs up the ball and rolls it out diagonally for the next player on the same side as them (4) to run out and collect.

Short catching / Underarm throwing

The fielder behind the stumps rolls the ball out, player 2 picks up the ball and throws over the top of the stumps to the fielder behind the stumps. The process is repeated until player 5 goes who then continues their run to replace the player behind the stumps.

Taking a Straight Ball

Divide the group into pairs.Player A throws the ball, overarm, at the target area. Player B (wicket keeper) completes the catch and returns the ball. 10 attempts then change roles. The coil position may be used if capable.

The Back-Foot Off-Side Driving Game

Organisation: Divide the group into 2 equal teams. Organise as shown in the diagram,set target for off drives only. Ball is served (on batters command of ready!) from the second cone infront of batter. Each player has 3 attempts to strike the ball. Fielders positioned between cones and boundary gather the ball and return to wicket keeper. An alternative method to execute a run out is for the wicket keeper to stand in a circle and instead of breaking the wicket when a ball is returned, simply to bounce the ball in the circle. Scoring: 1 run is scored if the ball passes between cones at fielders end, or is travelling in the correct direction when it is intercept (fielders remain behind the cones until the ball is hit). 3 runs are scored if ball passes between cones and batter runs around the cone and back again before the wicket keeper catches the fielders return and breaks the wicket. Direct hits count.4 runs are scored if ball reaches boundary wall and any extra runs completed. Batters may be caught or run out. Team with the most runs wins.Equipment: 1 bat and 1 tennis ball, set of wickets, 4 marker cones, and chalk markings.

(see c50016 &amp; c50016b for more info)<br />Rules of the practice<br /><br />1. Each player has 8-10 feeds, then all rotate clockwise.<br />2. Give groups 2-3 coaching points to work on.<br />3. Have about 3-4 rounds each (depending on time limit).<br />4. For the first round of 8-10 play every other shot with the top hand only (to show the importance of the top hand).<br />5. Make the last round competitive: try to survive all 8-10 feeds without getting out. If you're out, change round.<br />6. On the practice round, players get another feed if one goes wide. On the competitive round, have 8-10 feeds whether players leave the ball or play and miss.<br />7. If a player deliberately plays an attacking shot he loses that round of 8-10 feeds. (Be strict on this point - safety.)<br /><br />Don't set up groups too close to one another - think safety! Coach positions himself where he can monitor all groups safely.

High backlift over off stump with dominant top hand. (Bottom hand fingers and thumb grip.)<br />2. Step back and across the crease, getting head and body into line with the ball (eyes level).<br />3. Weight on back foot, whcih lands parallel to crease (head left forward of the body).<br />4. With dominant top hand and diamond shape formed with arms, Push bat towards the ball. (Forearms passing close to body.)<br />5. Strike ball forward of body, directly below eye level.<br />6. Keep leading elbow high, close to head.<br />7. Bottom hand fingers and thumb grip.<br />8. Top hand dominates throughout the shot.<br />9. Look through the handle of the bat on completion of the shot. (Head directly above hands, and in line with back foot.)<br /><br />Play the ball with soft hands, so it rolls back up the wicket.<br /><br /><br />Aims of the practice<br /> To protect the wickets and leave the wide balls; also to defend the ball straight back up the wicket (between the two parallel lines shown in the diagram). This is the furthest point away from the fielders. If you feel you are going to play the ball outside this line on the off side, leave it alone as it is too wide to play at.

The server serves the ball overarm from a kneeling position onto target, after batter shouts 'ready'. The target to be bowled at is positioned in line with middle stump 2-3 metres in front of batter. A wicket keeper is placed behind the batter not too close to the batter.<br /><br />Equipment: 1 tennis ball and 1 bat per group. 2 marker cones. Chalk marking.

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. Feeder drops ball in front of batter (with arm out horizontally, standing on the off side of the batsman for safety purposes). Batter steps towards the ball, and aims to drive the ball on the second bounce/ half volley, driving the ball on the ground through the target zones. Each group needs 6 tennis balls and each batter gets 6 feeds. Drill is best done in nets (2 grounds per net in opposite directions). Encourage players to wear at least batting gloves when doing this practice.

Organise the group into pairs and set up the activity as shown in the diagram. Ball is bowled to partner from the coil position. Partner catches the ball and bowls it back.The ball must bounce before reaching the partner.

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. One batter and one feeder minimum required. 6 tennis balls per pair/group.Feeder stands 4 meters away from batter, feeding ball as a drop feed, with arm out horizontally, and standing on the batters off side for safety. (adjust height of arm depending on height of feeder, and speed of batter to ball)Batter must use their feet and move down the wicket, meeting the ball on the second bounce, before hitting the ball through the cones. PROGRESSIONMake target smallerAllow player to hit over the top (aerially) &ndash; still keeping shape of shot and not leaning back or hitting to hard/to the leg side.Alter distance batter has to advance to get to the ball.

Set up two nets with 4-6 players assigned to each. Each net has a different type of bowler (spin, fast, leg etc.) Each batsman gets 12-15 minutes in the nets, they must play the ball back towards the bowler. On the 3rd ball they have to run up to a marked point on the net and then back to the crease again.

Each team starts with a score of 200 runs.Batsmen can be out in the usual ways, and also: (a) by hitting the ceiling of the hall, (b) by being caught off the walls, except when hitting a 6. The batsmen have unlimited wickets, if you are out you deduct 6 off the teams score.Scoring runs works in the following way :<BR>Back wall along the ground, score 4.<BR>Back wall in the air, score 6 (can not be caught off the back wall).<BR>Side walls, score 2 plus any additional singles that are run.<BR>Back wall behind the stumps, score 1 plus any additional singles that are run.<BR>Wides, byes and leg byes score 1 and an extra ball (be lenient with younger players/beginners)No LBW and Coach must always umpire and score. Batsmen bat together in pairs (e.g. four or five overs a pair, depending on time available.) A batsman can be run out at either end. Bowlers bowl six balls per over, always from the same end. Batsmen change ends either at the end of an over or when a wicket falls.<BR> All players including wicket keeper rotate clockwise after each over, unless you have a specialist wicket keeper.

Divide the group into pairs. Player A throws ball wide off the off stump so the Wicket Keeper has to move across to the right to take the ball (in the correct stance). If players are capable, bowl from the coil position.

Split the group so there is between 3-6 people in each net (including thrower or use coach). The thrower stands at the stumps whilst the rest queue up to bat at the other end. Two cones are placed to provide the target to drive the ball through. Each batsmen gets 2-3 consecutive balls then must go to the back of the queue. If the ball is left they may have another go. Once the batsmen drives the ball through the cones he must run to the stumps and back. <br /><br />Feeding: Each batsmen receives 24 balls and must be from a kneeling or standing position (depending on age and height). The ball should be short of a length, away from the batsmen, bouncing between knee and waste height.<br /><br/ Competition: To score 30 runs without getting out, with any shot played into the air being out. Competitions can also be set up between groups to see which group of batsmen can get the highest score with the thrower being from an opposition group.

One Day Singles Cricket Condit...

10-12 players are needed for singles cricket and players should pair up so that they can bat and bowl in pairs. Each pair has 1-2 wickets, once these have been used those players are out. The rules change depending on how many runs are scored. If the batsmen have scored between 0 and 15 runs they are allowed 3 good balls in which they must hit the ball and run, otherwise lose a wicket. If they have scored between 15-30 runs the batsmen have 2 good balls in which they must hit the ball and run, otherwise lose a wicket. Above 30 runs you must play hit and run, regardless of how the ball comes. Above 40 runs the batsmen are awarded a bonus, if not out, of 10 runs and then they must retire.

Hi Guys. I need to teach a cricket lesson to 40, 11 yr old students with a range of abilities in a sports hall. Need focus as well.
