Setting the right tone

Setting the right tone

I am going to be taking on my first serious school coaching role at under 15B level. My number one priority will be setting the right tone during the intro session to get the season of to the right start. Do you have any tips? Thanks and best wishes, Luke K.

get them motivated and pumped for playing cricket for a start. that is the most important i would guess. i mean, there`s no point playing players who can`t be bothered to play is there? They need to be enthused and you need to be the lifeblood in this to make sure they have a good mindset. to have mindset that honks is a surefire way of ruining your chances.

refer to alex martin, lloyd, or kenton for more details

i highly recommend their expertise

thanks for the recomendation lynx. fully agree with what you say.

Make sure that you start from the very beginning, so you need to turn up early and set a good example from the beginning. This will gain you respect and also set the correct tone.

A good way to ensure you set the right tone is to clearly set out your expectations with the group, so they understand clearly what you want from them. Hope that helps

Thanks both Lloyd and lynx for your responses. Keeping moments of standing around to a minimum as well, I`d guess.

Yes, a very valid but somewhat strange point is to also ensure that you talk to students with the sun going towards you so that your students are not distracted trying to look away from the sun.

Another point is that if you will be coaching them for a extended period of time ensure that you are not too relaxed as they will expect you to be like that the whole time and will think that they are going to have an easy time every lesson. Another point would be to ensure that you get their trust and be as friendly to all as you will be appreciated more if they feel that they will be able to speak to you and get a response that they will benefit from and will appreciate that.

Also if there are any technical errors in anything that they do ensure that you correct them as in my case I wasn`t told for a long time that when I bowled I jumped from the wrong foot and that in a roundabout way ended up with me out of the game with a stress fracture which is an on going problem. So educate them as to warm ups, not getting into something too quickly as this can cause problems to muscles and other things that can be avoided as some muscles that are used in cricket are not ever really used in other sport.

Also be clear on points and try not to over complicate things, and develop into more complex assistance later on in coaching.

hope that helps.
