Hi Melissa,

You can use your hands to catch the ball when intercepting. Here's a great drill to practice an interception.

Round the Feeder Defending

Description:

Have 2 Feeders (F1, F2) passing to each other about 5m apart.

The defender will start to the side and slightly behind F2. F1 will pass the ball to F2 and the defender will go for the intercept. If they get it they pass back to F1 (if not F2 passes back to F1).

The defender then runs back the way they came the whole way around the back of F2, to make a circle before intercepting the next.

Challenge your defenders to get 6 intercepts of passes in a row.

Coaching Points:

Defenders should:

  • Cut onto the ball
  • Hands up to meet ball early
  • Run through the ball
  • Pause before giving the ball back
  • Offload and go
