In training im teaching drills to come to the ball..or to get to the open space to recieve the ball...Why can't they practice it in there game?...

Hi , As well as just teaching the drills are you also getting them to try this out in practice games (Either full or mini games)? They may benefit if they are also trying this out in games during your training sessions....
Hi Naomi. As Tony says the best way is to run through the drills in practice games so the players get a similar feel to a game environment. What has worked for me during training sessions is to practice with another team from your club of similar age and skill level or run some half court games if you cant get another team. That way you have more control over what is happening and can either stop the game to discuss points and look at player positioning or reset and run through it again.

even playing half court games with them will help, or less structured drills where they have to make the choice of where to run and drive to get the ball. but it will just take time to get them out of bad habits.
