what is the best way for a netball goalkeeper to defend ?
Hi Hannah, the best way for a GK to defend is to do whatever stops the goals. If you are referring to a particular scenario you may need to describe it so answers can be more specific. A good goalkeeper needs to be able to have a range of skills and a good understanding of when to apply them and the role is very much dictated by the way the GS plays the game. There are many possible answers to your question depending on the situation but the most generalised instruction I give to my defenders is to keep the goalies shooting from as far out as they can and then keep them out of the rebound area after the shot.
i agree with Janet- it definitely depends on the Goalers and how they play the game. However, i tend to tell my Defenders, more so the GK to use the 'zoning' technique where they keep they goalers from entering the ring at all by using body positioning or keep them as far out from the goal ring as possible and use strong upright stances to position themselves to get the rebound.
Ive always told my Defenders to keep the Attackers as far away from the ring as possible, and make them shot. To not always watch the player but the ball.
in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
