Hi Linda,
Coach evaluation can be a very much personal preference, depending on what you are looking for them to do. Personally, I would ask the following questions.
1) What are the objectives of this drill? What are you trying to achieve?
2) Have you progressed the drill? If so, How? If not, why?
3) Are you supporting those girls that may be struggling and challenging those that are excelling? If so, how? If not, why?
Questions to ask yourself when evaluating them:
1) Do the athletes respond well to the coach?
2) Do the athletes know what they are doing?
3) Does the coach ask questions of the athletes or simple tell them what to do?
4) Is the coach approachable and giving praise and feedback?
A successful coach should know their drill objectives and what they are trying to achieve - each drill should have a specific purpose and improve the athletes. The coach should always try to progress the drill and the athletes understand why they are doing it and how it relates to game situations. As we all know, within a coaching group the ability of the athletes can vary therefore the coach should be able to differentiate, supporting those struggling and challenging more able athletes.
It is also important that your athletes respond well to the coach, that they are not afraid to approach them and ask questions. The coach should try to provide questioning to the athletes, as this will enhance their understanding and demonstrate they do grasp what is being taught. Similarly, coaches should always try to provide both praise and feedback where applicable - athletes need to know where they have done well but also be given constructive feedback on how they can improve.
Hope this helps.
