What constitutes as a short pass?

What is classed as a short pass and does this apply if a player in the goal circle is passing out to a centre court player and receiving it back again to shoot

There must be enough distance  between the hands of the passer and those of the receiver to allow a third player to move between otherwise it is a short pass wherever it occurs in play.
