hi, i'm going to be trying out for the Vicki Wilson competition and i am up against really good players that are in rep and int he A team in club netball. these players are so much better than me and there are nearly 30 people trying out to get into the team. i really want a position but it will be really hard to get in. the trials are going to be held inside a sports hall and we are playing on slippery wooden floor. i'm scared i might slip. also, there are going to be people watching us play, so i'm really nervous about that. i don't have training for netball, only netball games every Monday, so i'll have to do my own training. Any tips or advice? any training ideas i can do on my own without much equipment? Thanks so much!
Hi Ekeesha,
Firstly, do not go in believing other people are better than you! You need to have confidence in yourself and your own ability. I understand how this can be difficult and you are likely to feel nervous on the day, but try to create a saying that you can say to yourself just before you play. This may be something like 'You can do this' or it may be a few words that remind you what you need to focus on, for example 'Speed, angles, passing'. Having a few words/sentence will help you focus your mind onto the task and should help reduce your nerves.
Just ensure you do the basics well, focusing on your movement, passing and defence. Make sure your movement is short and sharp, that you use different angles to get free and get in front of the defender. Ensure your ball placement is accurate and avoid the defender's arms, and in regards to defence try to keep your player high and wide to slow the ball down through court.
As the floor may be slippy you can spray some hairspray to the bottom of your trainers, this will help you grip the court better.
Take a look at our DIY Drills which have been speciically designed for athletes to do alone, requiring minial equipment or assistnace.
Good luck, I am sure it will go really well.
what should I use instead of hairspray? i don`t have it, do you think hair gel would work?
thanks for your help
