I have two brand new player to introduce to a year 5 team. Both new players are very shy and seem afraid to get involved in the game. How do I build their confidence and what positions would be best to introduce them to? Thanks
everyone in your team is still young, and im guessing the two new players feel a little intimated in joining in an established team. always team them up with a more experienced player, and make sure you are doing lots of encouragement when they are doing a skill correctly.
try and do games where they have to call out to receive the pass to get their voices heard in the team. make that as part of the game (its also very important skill for all of your team members). other ideas are play a team building game that isnt netball. soccer, or a game of touch (which is good for footwork), or even a game of tiggy. something fun to get them to feel part of the team.
positions thats always a tricky one. but i tend to put my newest players in WD. but at the end of the day it depends on how tall they are, how quickly they pick things up. are they useful in defence if they are tall. whatever positions you put them in, just make sure you let them stay in one position for a few weeks until they find their feet and confidence.
in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
