Three of the girls in my Netta 9 team get over excited when competing for a ball and often use their arms to hold their opponents back - more sub-consciously than a deliberate action. Does anyone have any drills they can suggest to get the girls to keep their arms down?
Tell them to keep their hands clenched till they get to the ball.
Get them to hold on to their skirt/shorts whilst they're marking and only put their arms out to intercept the ball when the thrower attempts pass to their opponent.
If they are competing for a ball ,teach players to go forward to the ball with arms outstretched in readiness to catch the ball ,and teach the concept hands on thighs while in a defending position
in more ways than one

Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
