How do I get one of my players to hold the ball longer? She has awesome speed and stamina on the court but she doesn't slow down to throw the ball. She is an adult. What can I do to help her?
maybe explain to her Pena that she has to play within her teams limits too, and understand that her team needs her to slow down a little til they can catch up. ask her to look for the person she is going to pass to, and make sure they are ready for the pass by them running to them. do exercises that are about passing down the court one by one (i believe Janet had an exercise she uses and explained this in detail in a recent answer about creating space on the court) and make sure she is passing in front but so the other player is ready. if she is still passing too quickly then ask her to hold the pass for 2 seconds then pass and see if this helps. if she doesnt hold her pass for that long then she has a certain exercise to do like burpees or pushups to do. let me know how you go.
adults are the worst to coach as we think we already are super awesome...lol but try talking to her and ask if you can video tape the issue you see. sometimes actually seeing how many passes go astray might convince her that she might need to slow down a little.
Hi Pena I have an 11 year old that does the same thing. She is very talented and probably should be playing in a higher grade, but for now I need her to slow down for the other players who's skills are not as good. I have tried talking to her but to no avail, Lee-anne can you think of any other ways to slow her down.

in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
