Motivating an under 11s team

Motivating an under 11s team

I'm a coach for an under 11s teams, at the moment I'm doing basic drills to make them understand footwork, marking and passing, etc. But I think they get bored doing those drill so how do I motivate them and get them to be enthusiastic and have fun about the sport but also they can learn?

My U11s thrive on competition! 😬 So I turn the drills into comps eg - fast hands drill - in pairs, about 3m apart, the girls have to chest pass to each other (correct technique) up to 50. If the ball hits the ground, or if I have to correct their technique, they have to start from 0 again. First pair to 50 wins.

In in teams of 3 or 4, the girls have to pass the ball from one goal end to the other (so 1st player passes to 2, then runs down court to receive again from player 3 or 4 etc) If the ball touches the ground they Havel go back to the start, so teaching accurate passing as well as movement and forward progression.

You could do games in between drills. Like shooting games or split team into 2 and one team has to turn cones over the wrong way whilst the other turns them up the right way. Simple breaks in training can keep them motivated. Ask them to come up with a game each week. Try playing netball with a tennis ball. Hope that helps.
