I am coaching a team of 14 year olds that have been playing for many years. Half my team are serial steppers, how do I stop this terrible habit?
practice jumping with big wide elastic/rubber bands around their ankles while catching a pass.
Here is a drill that I use for my team. Get all the girls to line up on the base line and tell them to sprint to the other line. While they are running have a whistle in your mouth, and every 5 seconds or so, blow it. Once the girls hear the whistle, they have to stop where they are. Blow it again so they keep running. This will make them more aware of their feet, and I found it helped enormously with my team. Good Luck!!
I have my girls line up in the middle of the trans line, they then have to drive hard to the centre circle and land two feet in the circle, have them do this a few times then add the ball with you standing a little down court and to the side. Once they have their two foot landing worked out move on to one foot and bring the other one back to the ground foot for balance, again do it a few times with out the ball then add it. If that can get that under control have them land-step-throw. Hope this makes sence.
