When does a GD defend a strong mobile GA who seemlessly moves around the circle with ease? My GD has difficulty defending such a player
Hi Joseph,
Defending a strong, mobile Goal Attack (GA) can be challenging, but there are strategies your Goal Defence (GD) can use to improve their effectiveness:
Shadow and React: Encourage your GD to stay close to the GA, using a shadowing technique to mirror their movements. This will help in anticipating the GA's next move and reacting quickly.
Positioning: The GD should focus on maintaining a strong, open body position to dictate the GA's movement, ideally pushing them towards the sidelines to limit their options.
Interception Drills: Incorporate drills like "All intercepts for WD/GD" which focus on improving interception skills. This drill helps defenders practice reading the game and positioning themselves to intercept passes.
Communication: Ensure the GD communicates with other defenders to coordinate their efforts and close down space effectively.
For more detailed drills and strategies, you can explore the "Defensive Triangle Set-Up" and "Defence 3 over the line" drills which focus on team defensive setups.
I hope this helps,

Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
