How to defend a really tall shooter

If you have a short defender how can they best defend a tall GS or GA

Hi Julie

You should try to defend them from behind as you will never be able to intercept the shots but you can make them shoot from a distance and hope to get rebounds. The idea is that your defence player blocks/zones them as high up on the circle edge as they can so that they can not get their position for a shot close to the goal. The only way to do this is to position their body behind their player and stop their movement towards the goal as they would have to contact your player to move closer. Also you want to make the shot as difficult as possible for them. This is a good drill to use to practice that.

LJLL- Lean, Jump, Ladder, Late Hand.

*AUDIO DESCRIPTION ON*

  • Set up in pairs
  • 1 partner (A) has the ball.
  • Partner A faces away from partner B.
  • A Passes the ball in the air to themself and turns.
  • Partner B jumps back to 3 feet distance and needs to defend in one of 4 ways.
  1. Lean
  2. Jump
  3. Ladder
  4. Late hand
  • Switch over players.

Coaching Points:
  1. Lean- From 3 feet away, balancing and leaning up with hand over the ball.
  2. Jump- Getting ready to anticipate the release of the ball to time the jump so that defenders are able to reach the ball mid-air or distract the shooters rhythm.
  3. Ladder- Arms at different levels as if reaching out on different rungs on a ladder. Alternate the movement of the arms as if moving up the ladder whilst balancing and maintaining 3 feet distance.
  4. Late Hand- Much like the jump, this is about timing and anticipating the release of the ball.
  • It is important that players do not break the obstruction rule. When leaning ensure start at the correct distance and do not dip in.
  • Timing in the jump and the late hand is important. Learn the shooters rhythm. Are they 1 second or 2 second shooters. Players can then time their jumps to interfere with the shot.
  • When defending, players need to make their presence known, make themselves as big as possible.

Hi

Will intimidation be called by an umpire if the GK/GD uses the Ladder style of defence?
