How do I teach a GK to defend in the circle and change up the way she defends based on her partner?
defence is really tricky for it is constantly changing depending on the way the game is played, the height and skill of the shooters, their tatics, and the ability of the GK. it really does all depend on the age and skill level of your player. with the younger girls, i tend to teach in front, facing the game type of defence, and once they have mastered that, then move onto behind defence so they can work on zoning, then move onto side on. the hard part is teaching them when to use each one, and the transitions from one to the other. My defence players are still learning this and they are 14-16 yrs. the footwork required is the key, and teaching them to read the play. the best way is teach the basics, and then do a lot of practice games, and be right there explaining which move is best and why. its a long road, but if they love defence work, they will work it out with experience and practise.
in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
